Compatibility and combinability

A mass spectrometer consists of four basic parts a sample inlet system, an ion source, a means of separating ions according to the mass-to-charge ratios, ie, a mass analyzer, and an ion detection system. AdditionaUy, modem instmments are usuaUy suppUed with a data system for instmment control, data acquisition, and data processing. Only a limited number of combinations of these four parts are compatible and thus available commercially (Table 1). [Pg.539]

Principal component analysis has been used in combination with spectroscopy in other types of multicomponent analyses. For example, compatible and incompatible blends of polyphenzlene oxides and polystyrene were distinguished using Fourier-transform-infrared spectra (59). Raman spectra of sulfuric acid/water mixtures were used in conjunction with principal component analysis to identify different ions, compositions, and hydrates (60). In general, fully compatible resin are desirable. However, there are many applications where borderline compatibility is tolerated, and even in some cases, borderline compatibility or controlled incompatibility may enhance tack in adhesive systems. On the other hand, a resin with a borderline compatibility in combination with an oil or plasticizer in an adhesive formulation, will result in phase separation and therefore the migration of the oil or plasticizer to the adhesive surface is favoured. [Pg.618]

Plasticizers reduce hardness, enhance tack and reduce cost in rubber base adhesive formulations. A plasticizer must be easily miscible and highly compatible with other ingredients in the formulations and with the surfaces to which the adhesive is applied. The compatibility and miscibility of plasticizers can be estimated from the solubility parameter values. Most of plasticizers have solubility parameters ranging between 8.5 and 10.5 hildebrands. Unfortunately, not all combinations of chemical additives in water-based fluids are completely compatible, and side reactions leading to various byproducts have been noted. The best known of these side reactions is the reaction between the corrosion inhibitor nitrite and the emulsifiers di- and triethanolamine (7) to form N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDE1A), a nitrosamine reported to have carcinogenic activity (8, 9, 10). In fact, most nitrosamines are carcinogenic, and no animal species which has been tested is resistant to nitrosa mine-induced cancer. The advanced applications for nitrocellulose plastisol propellants require that they be integrally bonded to the motor case. Successful case bonding for the multiyear storage life of a rocket calls for special adhesives and liners which are completely compatible with these highly plasticized propellants.
