Motor case

An important appHcation is for filament-wound glass-reinforced pipe used in oil fields, chemical plants, water distribution, and as electrical conduits. Low viscosity Hquid systems having good mechanical properties (elongation at break) when cured are preferred. These are usually cured with Hquid anhydride or aromatic-amine hardeners. Similar systems are used for filament-win ding pressure botdes and rocket motor casings. [Pg.371]

The cycloaliphatic resins also are clearly superior in arc resistance and arc track resistance. This has led to applications in the tension insulators, rocket motor cases and transformer encapsulation. [Pg.766]

J. Pressure ventilated large induction or synchronous motors A Pressure Ventilated motor requires a closed pressure system to force filtered air or nitrogen into the motor casing (housing) to avoid corrosive or explosive conditions internally. Constance reference 56 describes some of the details of such a system also see Ecker et al. [69]. [Pg.659]

Maraging steels have found varied uses in the aerospace and aircraft industries. These uses have included rocket motor cases, landing gear components, aircraft forgings and fasteners. Other areas of usage include machine tool and die applications, and extrusion hardware. Marine uses include hydrofoil foil systems and aircraft arrester hooks. [Pg.573]

The combustion process is carried out in a thrust chamber or a motor case, and the reaction products are momentarily contained therein. The newly formed species are heterogeneous in composition and involve a wide variety of low molecular weight products. The temperature of these products is generally high, and it ranges from about 2,000°F (1,100°C) in gas generators to well over 8,000°F in advanced liquid propellant engines. The combustion products leave the chamber and are directed and expanded in a nozzle to obtain velocities from about 5,000 to 14,000 ft/sec. [Pg.122]

Under increasing strain the propint volume increases from the voids created around the unbonded solid particles. Nonlinearities in Young s modulus and Poisson s ratio then occur. Francis (Ref 50) shows this effect for a carboxy-terminated polybutadiene composite propellant with 14% binder as in Figure 12. He concludes that nonlinearities in low-temperature properties reduce the predicted stress and strain values upon cooling a solid motor, and therefore a structural analysis that neglects these effects will be conservative. However, when the predictions are extended to a pressurized fiberglas motor case, the nonlinearities in properties produce greater strains than those predicted with linear analysis... [Pg.905]

By accelerating the gaseous combustion products through the exhaust nozzle, a thrust is imparted to the nozzle and motor case. This thrust is determined by the time rate-of-change of the total momentum of the bounded fluid, as indicated by the expression... [Pg.4]

Epoxy resins for printed circuits, castings, rocket motor casings, coatings, and adhesives are almost all made from bisphenol A. Polycarbonates based on bisphenol A are used in glazing applications such as aircraft windows, school windows, and other areas where a combination of toughness and high clarity are required. [Pg.90]

Filament-wound structures are often used to store fluid under pressure fuel storage tanks, rocket motor cases, natural gas, and oxygen storage tanks. In some cases, the filament-wound structure is subjected to external pressure a diving bell or submarine. Filament winding has... [Pg.389]

The advanced applications for nitrocellulose plastisol propellants require that they be integrally bonded to the motor case. Successful case bonding for the multiyear storage life of a rocket calls for special adhesives and liners which are completely compatible with these highly plasticized propellants. Best results have been obtained with a combination of an impervious rubber liner and a crosslinked adhesive system with a limited affinity for the plasticizers used in the propellants. Examples of effective liners are silica-filled butyl rubber and chlorinated synthetic rubber. Epoxy polyamides, isocyanate-crosslinked cellulose esters, and combinations of crosslinked phenol-formaldehyde and polyvinyl formal varnishes have proved to be effective adhesives between propellant and impervious liners. Pressure curing of the propellants helps... [Pg.42]

Some technological information on the Aerojet General Corporation s composite propellants technology was published recently [20]. Ammonium perchlorate is ground to the particle sizes ranging from 1 to 200 fx and then mixed to form a blend of the various particle sizes which gives the best mechanical and ballistic properties. Ammonium perchlorate is mixed with liquid polybutadiene-acrylonitrile fuel, liquid plasticizer and aluminium powder (Fig. 118). The motor casing is coated internally... [Pg.383]
