Special Adhesion

Another widely used overlay adhesive is the contact type. These specialized adhesives, in the same group as mbber cement, may be of the solvent-base or water-base types. They are often used to bond overlays such as wood veneer, vinyl (poly(vinyl chloride)) films, or high pressure laminates such as countertop overlays. [Pg.379]

Plain slideways are preferred in the majority of applications. Only a thin film of lubricant is present, so its properties - especially its viscosity, adhesion and extreme-pressure characteristics - are of vital importance. If lubrication breaks down intermittently, a condition is created known as stick-slip , which affects surface finish, causes vibration and chatter and makes close limits difficult to hold. Special adhesive additives are incorporated into the lubricant to provide good bonding of the oil film to the sliding surfaces, which helps to overcome the problems of table and slideway lubrication. On long traverses, oil may be fed through grooves in the underside of the slideway. [Pg.866]

The advanced applications for nitrocellulose plastisol propellants require that they be integrally bonded to the motor case. Successful case bonding for the multiyear storage life of a rocket calls for special adhesives and liners which are completely compatible with these highly plasticized propellants. Best results have been obtained with a combination of an impervious rubber liner and a crosslinked adhesive system with a limited affinity for the plasticizers used in the propellants. Examples of effective liners are silica-filled butyl rubber and chlorinated synthetic rubber. Epoxy polyamides, isocyanate-crosslinked cellulose esters, and combinations of crosslinked phenol-formaldehyde and polyvinyl formal varnishes have proved to be effective adhesives between propellant and impervious liners. Pressure curing of the propellants helps... [Pg.42]

DVDs are manufactured with the use of special adhesives and coatings. [Pg.193]

Label all glassware and equipment that will be used with special adhesive tape labeled Radioactive. Plan the experiment so that a minimal number of transfers of radioactive materials is required. This will reduce the amount of contaminated glassware. [Pg.185]

Labels (made of paper or plastic) are usually applied to the filled package by a labelling machine. If the package has been filled below the dew point, then the package is likely to be wet by the time the label is applied. Special adhesives are therefore used and suitable advice can be provided by adhesive manufacturers. [Pg.231]

Adhesives are currently used in a wide range of medical devices, and the market for these specialized adhesives is expected to grow significantly over the next decade. Factors that will contribute to this growth include longer human life expectancy and the development of new medical technology. [Pg.15]

In high-volume industries such as automotive and appliances, there is a desire to minimize or eliminate any surface preparation process for steel. Special adhesive systems have... [Pg.357]

Commercially prepared trunk bands are also available. Special adhesive tape with a slippery silicone finish prevents caterpillars from crossing when placed around a tree s trunk. For extra protection, apply sticky ointment at the edges and in a thin strip around the center of the (ape. Snail-repellent tapes are also available to wrap around trunks. These have a sticky backing and are coated with cayenne pepper and salt to repel and kill slugs and snails. [Pg.446]

The second widely used method for preparing polyurethane foam laminates is the liquid adhesive, or wet process. Here special adhesives, either in the form of water solutions, or as solutions in organic solvents, are applied to either the fabric or the foam. The equipment is conventional. The water or solvent is evaporated, and the bond may be set by drying or curing at elevated temperature (20). One of the adhesives used for this application is based on acrylic interpolymer latices. This adhesive is used in the manufacture of thermal garments and insulated bags. Carpet underlay can also be made by adhesive laminating (7). [Pg.325]

Burgundy pitch. A resin obtained from Norway spruce or European silver fir. Other types, e.g., that from various species of pines, are also offered under this name. Characterized by extreme tackiness, soluble in acetone and alcohol. Used to some extent in surgeons tape and various special adhesive compositions. [Pg.189]

The lack of definitive studies is due to a mixture of reasons including 1) wide variety of polymers 2) newness of interest in the area 3) wide variety of applications (both potential and actual) of inorganic and organanetallic polymers not requiring thermal stability or thermal analysis (uses as anchored metal catalysis, control release agents, electrical and photochemical applications, speciality adhesives) 4) insufficient description, identification, of the products 5) wider variety of degradation routes and other thermal behavior in comparison to organic polymers and 6) many products were synthesized and briefly characterized before the advent of modern thermal instrumentation. [Pg.43]

The mechanical properties of the surface-modified products were examined by a special shear test. After reactive surface modification under optimised chemical and technological conditions, the test specimens were cut and the pieces were bonded by special adhesives. The coimected pieces were examined in a shear test and the shear strength was determined in dependence on the chemical and processing conditions. The best results for polyamides were obtained for polyacrylic acid as the modifier with an increase of the shear strength from 28 MPa (non-modified polyamide) up to 37 MPa for polyacrylic acid-modified polyamide surfaces. [Pg.190]

An example of an application of these special adhesives is their contribution to the construction of liquid gas tanks and tanker gas transport. Worldwide transport of this fuel would not be feasible from an ecological point of view without this adhesive technology, since the construction of large-scale tankers was first made possible by development and use of suitable insulation and bonding applications. The adhesives had to yield high-strength bonds, for instance at temperatures down to —160°C. This specification was met by use of these specially modified adhesives with an interpolation of PUR and silicone adhesives (MS adhesives), see details in Sect. 3.6. [Pg.233]

The special adhesive behavior of these materials is to be seen in the respective surface structure, which renders the positive adhesion described in Section 6.1 particularly important. [Pg.123]

Plasticised PVC—rarely used except as bags (IV solutions, blood) or as pillow packs. Sealed with special adhesives, or by HF/RF welding. Plasticised film is highly moisture permeable. [Pg.268]

Cyanoacrylates are not appropriate for the bonding of the steel parts of an automobile, because of the environments that the car will be exposed to. Those environments include such things as rain, variations in temperatnre, exposure to solvents (such as gasoline, oil, and windshield washer solntion), ozone, acid rain, salt spray, and ultraviolet light from the Sun. (A more appropriate adhesive for car parts would be an epoxy-based adhesive.) Another example of a special adhesive would be the one used to attach a new rearview mirror in an antomobile. Because the cured adhesive in this case will be exposed to wide variations in temperature and to an extremely large amonnt of nltraviolet fight from the Snn for prolonged periods of time, an adhesive formnlated specifically for these conditions should be used. [Pg.48]
