Vinyl Resins Protective Coatings. Vinyl resins for the protective coatings are disclosed the first time in 1951 on a monthly basis. In 1949 and 1950, they are included under miscellaneous synthetic plastics and resin materials for protective coatings (9). [Pg.97]

Vinyl resins ie, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate which contain hydroxyl groups from the partial hydrolysis of vinyl acetate and/or carboxyl groups, eg, from copolymerized maleic anhydride, may be formulated with alkyd resins to improve their appHcation properties and adhesion. The blends are primarily used in making marine top-coat paints. [Pg.42]

Vinyhdene chloride copolymers are available as resins for extmsion, latices for coating, and resins for solvent coating. Comonomer levels range from 5 to 20 wt %. Common comonomers are vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, and alkyl acrylates. The permeability of the polymer is a function of type and amount of comonomer. As the comonomer fraction of these semicrystalline copolymers is increased, the melting temperature decreases and the permeability increases. The permeability of vinylidene chloride homopolymer has not been measured. [Pg.489]

Vinyls. Vinyl resins are thermoplastic polymers made principally from vinyl chloride other monomers such as vinyl acetate or maleic anhydride are copolymerized to add solubUity, adhesion, or other desirable properties (see Maleic anhydride, maleic acid, and fumaric acid). Because of the high, from 4,000 to 35,000, molecular weights large proportions of strong solvents are needed to achieve appHcation viscosities. Whereas vinyls are one of the finest high performance systems for steel, many vinyl coatings do not conform to VOC requirements (see Vinyl polymers). [Pg.365]

Vinyl tars These are a combination of vinyl resins and selected coal tars. They are claimed to be similar to the two-pack coal tar epoxies but with the advantages that they are a single pack, not dependent on temperature for curing, and are easy to re-coat at any stage. [Pg.129]

Vinyl resins are widely used as fabric coatings because of their combination of toughness and flexibility, and their property of not supporting combustion. Because they are nonflammable they replaced nitrocellulose lacquers for many applications on fabrics. They produce excellent coatings on metals but care must be taken in their application because, like most high polymers, they have strong cohesive forces that may overcome the adhesive forces. The entire coating may flake off as a continuous sheet if the precise application conditions have not been complied with for the various modifications. [Pg.503]

Lacquer. A coating composition that is based on synthetic thermoplastic film-forming material dissolved in organic solvent that dries primarily by solvent evaporation. Molded articles from cellular polysulfone, coated with polystyrene, epoxy resin, or vinyl resin, are reported to have improved hardness and surface rigidity. A wide range of internal lacquers developed for the heat processed food industry also find uses in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic field. The lacquers, which include acrylic, phenolics, polyesters, epoxy and vinyl resins, are normally applied via an organic solvent which is subsequently evaporated during curing. The use of aqueous carriers and powder coatings has also been developed. Ferrolite is a plastic coated metal using polypropylene, polyester, etc. [Pg.288]
