Printing industry

Synthol coproducts include alcohols, ketones, and lower paraffins. They are used mainly as solvents in the paint and printing industries, although some alcohols are blended into fuels. In 1992 Sasol began producing 17,500 t/yr 1-butanol [71-36-3] from 5-07-acetaldehyde [75-07-0] and plaimed to start a plant to produce high purity ethanol [64-17-5] in 1993. Acetone [67-64-1] and methyl ethyl ketone [78-93-3] are two ketone coproducts sold as solvents. 

On a worldwide basis the printing industry ranks as number four in manufacturing employment. Over 4.5 million people ate employed at mote than 350 thousand sites. In the United States, 1993 employment exceeded 1.5 million, an increase of over 180 thousand jobs in the period of 1982—1993. Similar growth in employment is being experienced worldwide. Table 1 shows industry trends in the United States, which ate typical of those worldwide. These do not include revenues from packaging or office copying.

Asbestos fibers have likewise been used in reinforcement of plastics such as poly(vinyl chloride), phenoHcs, polypropylene, nylon, etc. Reinforcement of both thermoset and thermoplastic resins by asbestos fibers has been practiced to develop products for the automotive, electronic, and printing industries. 

Instant photographs are widely used for identification purposes, for example, for drivers Hcenses, student identification cards, and credit cards that can be issued immediately. Most passport photographs generated in the United States are instant color prints. Industrial and business appHcations include photographs of record for insurance purposes, constmction documentation, and real estate photography. 

The trend in the xerographic copying and printing industry is to expand the use of organic photoconductors which are typically inexpensive and have a useful life. However, the a-Si H photoreceptors, even though more expensive to manufacture, may ultimately have an advantage in greater durabihty. 

Numerous dyes structurally related to the safranines, such as the eurodines, e.g. (141), the indulines, e.g. (142), the nigrosines (143) and aniline black, a pigment of unknown structure used in the printing industry, are well known and a detailed account of their chemistry and applications has been presented (57HC(ll)l).
