The use of nylon-11 for powder coatings or dry coatings (qv) has been developed in response to a growing concern for the environment (44) (see Coating PROCESSES, powder technology). Electrostatic deposition allows thin films to be appHed to metal substrates. Once the powder is appHed, it must be melted and coalesced into a continuous plastic film. Eorced draft or irradiant ovens are used for fusion, and because no polymerization or cross-linkage are required for curing, coated objects can be processed quickly and air-cooled (45). [Pg.154]

It was claimed that the maximum continuous operating temperature in most chemical environments was 120°C and even 140-150°C in some instances. The major chemical applications were in the form of pipe and tank linings and injection moulded valve and pump parts. General corrosion damage was the cause of failure of an A1 alloy welded pipe assembly in an aircraft bowser which was attacked by a deicing-fluid — water mixture at small weld defects . Selective attack has been reported in welded cupro-nickel subjected to estuarine and seawater environments . It was the consequence of the combination of alloy element segregation in the weld metal and the action of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB). Sulphide-coated Cu-enriched areas were cathodic relative to the adjacent Ni-rich areas where, in the latter, the sulphides were being continuously removed by the turbulence. Safety No year goes by without some widely used chemical being declared suspect on toxicity grounds. The paint industry has responded rapidly to eliminate toxic chemicals from coatings or to show how they can be used safely in an industrial environment. Examples are the elimination of specific ether-alcohol solvents and the introduction of air-fed hoods for spraying isocyanates. Of particular interest in corrosion prevention is the current pressure to eliminate chromate pigments. Currently there are no equally effective alternatives and the emphasis has had to be on safe usage. The search for replacements continues. [Pg.635]

The primary function of a coating is to act as a barrier which isolates the underlying metal from the environment, and in certain circumstances such as an impervious continuous vitreous enamel on steel, this could be regarded as thermodynamic control. However, whereas a thick bituminous coating will act in the same way as n vitreous enamel, paint coatings are normally permeable to oxygen and water and in the case of an inhibitive primer (red lead, zinc chromate) anodic control will be significant, whilst the converse applies to a zinc-rich primer that will provide cathodic control to the substrate. [Pg.1461]

Biocides are by their nature intrinsically toxic, in this respect any adventitious release to the environment requires an assessment of the relative risk posed. The 5th Environmental Action Plan of the EU is committed to a substantial reduction in the use of biocides. In particular, the Biocidal Products Directive (98/08/EC) is concerned with controlling biocidal products in the market place. Compliance with this directive is required from all member states by 14th May 2000. In this context, a strategy to control the release of biocides is timely, if continued protection is to be afforded to industry and consumer alike. Almost all new metallic surfaces exposed to the environment are sooner or later coated with a layer of corrosion products metal oxides, sulfides, and carbonates, for example, are common corrosion products formed when a metal or alloy interacts with contaminants in the environment. If the layer is continuous and stable, as in uniform corrosion, it may conceal the underlying metal from further exposure and protect it from additional corrosion if it is discontinuous, or chemically unstable, however, the metal surface below the initial layer of corrosion products remains in contact with the environment. Exposed to humidity and pollutants, the corrosion process continues, penetrating deeper into the metallic bulk and eventually resulting in its total destruction. [Pg.216]

Conductive sample coatings are not needed because the gas molecules in the chamber replenish electrons on the sample surface to prevent charging. Direct observation of either wet or dry specimens is possible based on the continuously variable specimen environment. Plastics. Part of the trend to substitute plastic and composite substrates for metals can be attributed to a desire to avoid the process of metallic corrosion and subsequent failure. Relatively little attention has been called to the possible failure modes of plastics under environments considered corrosive to metals. More extensive work should be conducted on the durability and life expectancy of plastic and composite materials under end-use environments. A further consideration is the potential for polymer degradation by the products of metal corrosion in hybrid structures comprising metal and polymer components. Since it is expected that coatings will continue to be used to protect plastic and composite substrates, ancillary programs need to be conducted on the mechanisms by which coatings can protect such substrates. [Pg.14]
