Tin is used in various industrial appHcations as cast and wrought forms obtained by rolling, drawing, extmsion, atomizing, and casting tinplate, ie, low carbon steel sheet or strip roUed to 0.15—0.25 mm thick and thinly coated with pure tin tin coatings and tin alloy coatings appHed to fabricated articles (as opposed to sheet or strip) of steel, cast iron, copper, copper-base alloys, and aluminum tin alloys and tin compounds. [Pg.60]

Because of the steep pitch required, slides are limited in application. They are most commonly used to bridge the gap between roller-conveyor systems on two floors, because the roller conveyor can take the container off the slide rapidly and ehminate or reduce the chance for collisions. Slides may also be used when containers can be chuted from an upper floor to a manually loaded carrier. The use of several rollers at the feed point is recommended for easy dehveiy to the sloping section. If the drop is short and containers light, a roller cleanout will prevent backup of containers on the slide. The slope of gravity slides is a function of container weight, size, and friction characteristics and should be selected with care to be sure that containers do not move either too swiftly or not at all. Slides usually use flat steel sheet. [Pg.1976]

At first sight, the answer would seem to be to increase the thickness of the zinc layer. This is not easily done, however, because the hot dipping process used for galvanising is not sufficiently adjustable and electroplating the zinc onto the steel sheet increases the production cost considerably. Painting the sheet (for example, with a bituminous paint) helps to reduce the loss of zinc considerably, but at the same time should vastly decrease the area available for the cathodic protection of the steel and if a scratch penetrates both the paint and the zinc, the exposed steel may corrode through much more quickly than before. [Pg.235]

Under aggressive corrosion conditions it is estimated that the maximum corrosion current density in a galvanised steel sheet will be 6 X 10 A m . Very often steel sheet pilings exist in conjunction with steel-reinforced concrete structures in harbors or locks. If cathodic protection is not necessary for the reinforced concrete structure, there is no hindrance to the ingress of the protection current due to the connection with the steel surfaces to be protected. The concrete surface has to be partly considered at the design stage. An example is the base of the ferry harbor at Puttgarden, which consists of reinforced concrete and is electrically connected to the uncoated steel sheet piling. [Pg.380]

The Nippon Steel Corporation in 1972 pioneered the use of continuous annealing lines , in which rolled steel sheet is heat-treated and quenched under close computerised control while moving. For this advanced process to give its best results, especially when the objective is to make readily shapable sheet for automobile bodies, steel compositions have to be tailored specifically for the process composition and processing are seamlessly tied to each other. Today, dozens of these huge processing lines are in use worldwide (Ohashi 1988). [Pg.351]
