Chronic fatigue

Quite by accident Jennifer discovered that her tendon and connective tissue problems and chronic fatigue were exasperated by molds and chemical exposures. Her understanding is that her various health problems are related to but not completely caused by MCS. One doctor s theory is that her MCS and connective tissue problems may be caused by a metabolic dysfunction. Another doctor, after looking at her extensive medical history, told her she will never find an answer. Jennifer summarizes her ten years of medical tests and examinations by saying that her body doesn t absorb nutrients and her immune system has collapsed. 

That spring I took a turn for the worse because I was reacting to molds and pesticides. On top of that, our friend s husband, who doesn t believe in environmental illness, came home, and he wore a heavy scent. My body just collapsed again with chronic fatigue. That time I was in bed again four months, unable to do anything. 

In 1989 I had pneumonia and I have never been well since. I know, now, that is where I crossed the line with chronic fatigue and chemical sensitivity. 

Looking at Herbert Whitish, chairman and health director of the Shoalwater Bay Tribe, you d never dream he s ill. Members of his tribe and family have no idea he ssuffers with chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivities, and loss of his ability to participate in activities he once enjoyed. The day his photo was taken for this publication, he was too ill to participate in the interview, which was later accomplished by telephone. 

Out of ninety tribal people who live here, five have chronic fatigue. That s a pretty large group for a small area. You wonder why mostly reservation people are sick in this area, although we don t know for sure that there aren t a lot of other people in the area who are also ill. All we can talk about is what we know, and what we know is tribal. 

There are always resources available. It might be a confidante, somebody to talk to, like my wife was after I was diagnosed. That helped me to start dealing with the fact that I had chronic fatigue. To me, everybody s got an internal resource, too. The mind is a wonderful thing and can do many things for you. You have to start training your mind to get over the obstacles. 

Terri courageously disclosed that she suffers from bipolar disorder, a mental illness which her physician attributes to MCS. It was not the first time I had heard of this theory. Terri had no history of mental illness prior to the onset of her chronic fatigue and MCS. 

If I m having a bad day I sometimes still write, unless a reaction to a chemical is affecting my brain. When I can t think clearly, I can t write. And sometimes I feel so apathetic that I can t write. But I m thankful that I have the skill. I think education is so important to prevent others from getting this illness. I believe that chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sick building syndrome and similar conditions with other names are all forms of MCS. They ll find that out with more studies. People just don t know what s wrong with them. They think they ve got asthma, depression, attention deficit disorder and a lot of other problems that can be related to chemical exposures. 

One of the losses Bernard experienced was his dream of earning a doctorate. After he was sensitized to chemicals the classrooms and library made him ill, his cognitive skills were impaired and chronic fatigue limited his activities. 

Frequently, MCS involves imbalances in one s nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, and impaired detoxification abilities. Conditions such as CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome), fibromyalgia, and Candida Syndrome are frequently found in people with MCS. It is not yet known whether these are separate diseases or whether they represent different manifestations of a common underlying problem. 

The most recent SPECT scan (single photon computed tomography of the brain) studies, by a Harvard School of Public Health physician and researcher, have shown that people with MCS have blood flow patterns in the brain that are different from those of healthy controls and from people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.4...

Malfunctioning of some parts of the central control mechanism can result in failure of muscles to contract normally and in a coordinated manner, e.g. Parkinson s disease (Chapter 14) or result in excessive fatigue (chronic fatigue syndrome (Chapter 13)). 

Movement is an essential component of life. If something moves, it is assumed to be alive. External movement depends upon skeletal muscle whereas internal movement depends upon smooth and cardiac muscles. The latter muscles are discussed in other chapters. Although chronic fatigue syndrome is generally considered to be a recent illness, compounded by contemporary stresses particularly after a viral attack, this appears not to be the case. Edgar Jones and Simon Wesseley researched the medical literature and discovered a report of a condition resembling chronic fatigue syndrome. An extract from their paper follows.
