Multiple chemical sensitivity chronic fatigue syndrome

Dr. Martin Pall of Washington State University uncovered the neurological biochemical processes that underlie MCS, and demonstrated a link to processes that are also relevant to chronic fatigue syndrome. He described the increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier as a result of exposure to certain substances and as a result of increased peroxynitrite level. The more this barrier disintegrates, the more chemical substances are able to directly enter the brain and the more sensitive a person becomes. Increased levels of nitric oxide in the body in turn influence the enzymes responsible for breaking down chemical substances (P450 enzyme). He published an article about his model, tide Elevated Nitric Oxide/Per-oxynitrite Theory of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Central Role of N-Methyl-d-Aspartate Receptors in the Sensitivity Mechanism, in Environmental Health Perspectives. It can be read online at www.ehponline.org/members/ 2003/5935/5935.html. [Pg.42]

Individuals with chemical sensitivity, also referred to as chemical intolerance, are those who react adversely to low levels of chemicals that are tolerated by the general population. These include Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), and Gulf War Syndrome (GWS). Each is a clinically defined condition that can give rise to chemical sensitivity, but there is, however, considerable comorbidity between them. Each is addressed individually, followed by a discussion of its similar responses to chemical stimuli. [Pg.429]

As can be seen from this list of symptoms, many are emblematic of multiple chemical sensitivity and chronic fatigue syndrome. This crossover of symptoms often complicates the diagnosis of FM. Mechanistically, oxidative stress and nitric oxide are believed to play a role in FM pathophysiology however, it is not clear at this time whether the oxidative stress abnormalities found in FM are the cause or the effect J46 59 ... [Pg.445]

The cultural pattern of illnesses in the Francophone world also differs from that in the English-speaking world. Illness entities such as chronic fatigue syndrome or multiple chemical sensitivity are hardly acknowledged (Mouterde, 2001 Girault, 2002). [Pg.359]

Consideration of environmental diseases , e.g., siek building syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome. [Pg.544]

There were many nonspecific illnesses, or syndromes, that emerged in the late twentieth century. Despite, or perhaps because of, their proliferation, they are usually controversial. All have in common either a lack of identifiable cause or a diversity of expression, or both. In addition to sick building syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity, nonspecific Ulnesses include Gulf War syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, cumulative trauma disorder (also called repetitive strain injury), and a host of psychological disorders. [Pg.181]
