Chorionic Somatomammotropin. Three genes encode human chorionic somatomammotropin [11085-36-2] (hCS). These are located within a cluster of genes on human chromosome 17 which code for pituitary growth hormone [12629-01 -5] (GH-N), placental GH [109675-94-7J (GH-V), and three hCS molecules, ie, hCS-A, hCS-B, and hCS-V (1 3), also referred to as human placental lactogens. All of these molecules ate closely related to GH in stmcture (Fig. 1). Placental lactogens also exist in rodents and mminants however, these hormones are more closely related to prolactin than GH.

Chorionic gonadotropin (CG) is produced in the placenta. Together- with the pituitary hormones, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), it constitutes the glycoprotein family of gonadotropins. The actions of CG are mediated by the LH receptor, both belonging to the superfamily of G-protein Coupled Receptors. 

In addition, several other organs, like the heart, ovaty, amnion, chorion, decidua, testis, epididymis and prostate, have been reported to synthesize OT, suggesting a paracrine role for this hormone in these tissues. Ectopic AVP production by lung cancer cells or other neoplasms has been described in humans, leading to the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. 

Chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is extracted from human placentas. The actions of HCG are identical to those of the pituitary LH. The hormone is used to induce ovulation in anovulatory women. This drug is also used for the treatment of prepubertal cryptorchism (failure of the testes to descend into the scrotum) and in men to treat selected cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

If the genetic lesion is understood and a specific probe is available, prenatal diagnosis is possible. DNA from cells collected from as little as 10 mL of amniotic fluid (or by chorionic villus biopsy) can be analyzed by Southern blot transfer. A fetus with the restriction pattern AA in Figure 40-10 does not have sickle cell disease, nor is it a carrier. A fetus with the SS pattern will develop the disease. Probes are now available for this type of analysis of many genetic diseases.
