Chemical industry major companies

Because of the many different products and processes of the chemical industry it is difficult to make a meaningful description of the chemical industry. However, essentially at the base of the chemical industry are companies that combine organic and inorganic materials from the earth with heat, air, and water to make chemicals that, in turn, are essential to products used in everyday life in modern economies. Because of projected nylon-6,6 growth of 4—10% (167) per year in the Far East, several companies have announced plans for that area. A Rhc ne-Poulenc/Oriental Chemical Industry joint venture (Kofran) announced a 1991 startup for a 50,000-t/yr plant in Onsan, South Korea (168,169). Asahi announced plans for a 15,000-t/yr expansion of adipic acid capacity at their Nobeoka complex in late 1989, accompanied by a 60,000-t/yr cyclohexanol plant at Mizushima based on their new cyclohexene hydration technology (170). In early 1990 the Du Pont Company announced plans for a major nylon-6,6 complex for Singapore, including a 90,000-t/yr adipic acid plant due to start up in 1993 (167). Plans or negotiations for other adipic acid capacity in the area include Formosa Plastics (Taiwan) (171) and BASF-Hyundai Petrochemical (South Korea) (167). A weekly publication of McGraw-Hill. This excellent pubheation concentrates on the news and business aspects of the chemical industry. It periodically has excellent marketing and sales studies for various products. It also publishes annually a plant-site-selection issue and a Buyers Guide. The Buyers Guide lists the major producers and the source of supply for over 6,000 chemical products, and has a list of chemical trade names. It publishes, quarterly, the current financial condition of 300 companies involved in chemical processing. [Pg.21]

TKPP (K4P2O7) is a merchant chemical produced by many major companies throughout the world. It is available commercially as a free flowing, white, grsr.ular solid or as a 60% wt. solution. In addition to its widespread use in the liquid detergent formulations, TKPP is also utilized in the food industry. It has been certified by the U. S. Department of Transportation as nontoxic. The solubility of TKPP in water at 60° F is shown in Table I. It is possible to achieve increased density at temperatures above 60° F because of increased solubility. [Pg.622]

The big players in the chemical industry have developed very powerful company-specific ERP systems (enterprise resource planning earlier this type of system was denoted as production planning and control) since the 1960s. The growing costs to maintain and adapt these systems have motivated the move to integrated standard business software systems in the last decade. The majority of the big chemical companies use SAP R/3 resp. SAP ERP from SAP AG other well-known solution vendors include Marcam (now part of Infor) and JD Edwards (now part of PeopleSoft resp. Food and feed additives, also known as dietary supplements, are minor ingredients added to improve the product quality. Most commonly, the effects desired relate to color, flavor, nutritive value, taste, or stability in storage. The market sizes are estimated to be 20 billion each for food and for feed additives, respectively. The major customers for the food additives are the big food companies Ajinomoto, Danone, Kraft, and Nestle, mentioned at the beginning of the chapter. With the exception of Ajinomoto, these companies are rarely backward-integrated. As they prefer to use natural ingredients rather than synthetic ones, they are not very important customers of the fine-chemical industry. Premixers, that is, enterprises that prepare ready-to-use mixtures of nutrients for the farmers who raise cattle, pigs, and chicken, are the main users of feed additives. [Pg.119]

Definition of Research and Development. The major purpose of this research project was to access the impact of environmental protection regulations on R D in the industrial chemical industry. Therefore, it was necessary to identify the industrial chemical industry and to determine what constitutes a "chemical firm." To resolve this problem, the researchers used those firms classified in SIC Codes 2800 to 2899. Further, the industrial chemical industry is oligopolistic in nature consequently, a select group of large companies constitute the bulk of all industry activity. [Pg.74]
