Securing Safety

Maintenance crews should use established company and industry guidelines to determine whether components should be returned to service. They need to determine cause of damage or deterioration. Such analysis may help identify improper use of machinery, or faulty maintenance procedures, which should be corrected. All maintenance or repairs for each vehicle should be documented on a separate maintenance reporting form. [Pg.246]

Never allow any vehicle that is not roadworthy to leave the maintenance facility. Such vehicles should be locked out and tagged out to prevent their use. [Pg.246]

Management s responsibility is to establish inspection and reporting procedures for drivers. It must ensure compliance with state, federal, and industry rules. Its job is to select drivers and provide them with adequate training for inspecting critical components and to determine whether their vehicle will be safe while on the road. Management must enforce both driver inspection and maintenance policies. It must see to it that maintenance personnel are responsive to driver-reported deficiencies, and it must establish company standards for placing vehicles out of service. It must [Pg.246]

Management must make sure drivers and maintenance personnel are trained and knowledgeable to make a determination during inspections as to whether or not a vehicle is safe or should be taken out of service. Neither set of employees (drivers or maintenance personnel) should perceive that management wants them to circumvent good vehicle safety practices. [Pg.247]

A preventive maintenance program can be developed for any industrial function, that has a maintenance component. The same principles used in the truck operator example in this chapter can be used for other mobile equipment, machinery, or process maintenance. It matters little the type of maintenance. It is more important that the workers, operators, supervisor, and management realizes that the care taken in prevention will pay dividends in cost savings, accidents cost, less equipmerrt damage, and better overall working conditions and employee attitudes. Care of your i ysical assets (physical plant, vehicles, machinery, etc.) are critical to the bottom line. The bonus is that you will reduce one of the ctors, which can contribute to your occupational injury rate. [Pg.214]

With regard to the anxiety for physical damages, safety is equivalent to security and danger to anxiety. However, in the other cases, safety does not always mean security. Safety equipment, safety process, and safety plant imply harmless equipment, harmless process, and harmless plant, respectively. On the other hand, secure equipment, secure process, and secure plant should not only be harmless but should also guarantee peace of mind. [Pg.145]

Disconnection and rejection - the individual has an expectation that their needs for security, safety, stability, nurturance, empathy, acceptance and respect will not be met in a consistent manner. The typical early family dynamics involve cold, rejecting, withholding, lonely, explosive, unpredictable or abusive behaviour from others. The EMS in this domain are abandonment/instability (perceived instability or unreliability of personal support), mistrust/abuse (expectation that others will hurt, abuse, humiliate, lie, manipulate, cheat, etc.), emotional deprivation (perception that one s needs for emotional support will not be met), defectiveness/ shame (the feeling that one is defective, bad, unwanted, inferior, flawed or invalid in some important respect) and social isolation/alienation (the feeling that one is different from others and isolated from any social group). [Pg.151]
