Definition of Research and Development. The major purpose of this research project was to access the impact of environmental protection regulations on R D in the industrial chemical industry. Therefore, it was necessary to identify the industrial chemical industry and to determine what constitutes a "chemical firm." To resolve this problem, the researchers used those firms classified in SIC Codes 2800 to 2899. Further, the industrial chemical industry is oligopolistic in nature consequently, a select group of large companies constitute the bulk of all industry activity. 

Chemical structure registration is an important activity that is necessary for drug discovery. The structures that have been developed by a pharmaceutical company constitute the "crown jewels" of chemical information, and they must be properly and securely archived. The registration process usually involves the process of extracting, cleaning, transforming, and loading the data—sometimes term ECTL. 

About 60 percent of pipeline shipments were on pipelines owned jointly by groups of oil companies constituting their major shippers, primarily the major integrated oil companies. Compared with the macroeconomic approach to social capital, under which the capital is regarded as an external category in the operation of companies, the microeconomic approach, i.e. the approach dedicated to individual businesses, is still in the phase of scientific development. R.S. Burt can be seen as a pioneer in the microeconomic approach to social capital. He assumed that both the internal and external relationships of a company constitute its social capital (Burt 1992, p. 58). Many authors who deal with issues of social capital in companies agreed with this concept and proposed the following, classification of social capital (Grzanka 2009, p. 102) ... 

There were few Negro troops in the Army in the peacetime period, and prior to 1940 the number of Negro units provided for in the Protective Mobilization Plan (PMP) was decidedly limited. QuaHtative arguments deal primarily with the sense of ownership and security which result from individually owned generation systems. Additional complexity will arise from the aesthetic criteria specific to both individual homes and the surrounding community. Of course, the autonomy inherent in distributed rooftop arrays probably constitutes an institutional barrier to their acceptance by some utiHty companies, unless they are involved in the financing and/or marketing chain. 

Rolled Zinc. RoUed-zinc products constitute ca 2—3% of slab zinc consumed in the United States over the past ten years. The U.S. production has declined by ca 50% since 1965 (65) and in 1996 only two companies rolling zinc products were left. 

In some situations there may be no national standard against which to calibrate your devices. Colors and textures are two examples. If you face this situation, you should gather together a group of experts within your company or trade association and establish by investigation, experimentation, and debate what constitutes the standard. Having done this you should document the basis of your decisions and produce a device or number of devices which can be used to compare the product with the standard using visual, quantitative, or other means. 

As a example of the application of Bayes theorem, suppose tliat 50% of a company s manufactured output comes from a New York plant, 30% from a Permsylvania plant, and 20% from a Delaware plant. On die basis of plant records it is estimated diat defective items constitute 1% of the output of the New York plant, 3% of the Pennsylvania plant, and 4% of die Delaware plant. If an item selected at random from die company s manufactured output is found to be defective, what are die revised probabilities diat die item was produced, by each of die diree plants ... 

For reasons mentioned before (see Chapter 4), the mentor should not be too close to the mentee in terms of a power relationship. Thus, the mentor should not be the mentee s line manager. Rather you might want to select someone who is either a peer, from another department or external to the company. Having mentors who are more than two levels above the mentee often constitutes too great a power-distance in which mentees feel uncomfortable... 

Besides the standard vectors for constitutive and inducible expression of genes in P. pastoris, new expression vectors and promoters with new regulatory features allowing, for example, also methanol-free inducible high-level expression were discovered or developed by mutagenesis of the mostly used alcohol oxidase promoter Paoxi [87]. Thus, a new P. pastoris expression system became available, which is commercialized by the company VTU (AT). 

In conclusion, we could say that entry requirements are justified inasmuch as they are necessary to guarantee the effectiveness or efficiency of pharmaceuticals. However, establishing or maintaining unnecessary requirements to this end is tantamount to establishing costs that constitute barriers to market entry which some companies, especially smaller ones, will be unable to clear. Ultimately, these barriers also weaken competition and the consequent possibility of prices being forced down. 

There are companies focused to the biocatalytic area for which the commercialization of enzymes constitutes the main business. Some of them also include R D activities in the whole range of areas concerning adding value to their product chain. The following sections describe some of those companies, for which their enzyme or protein business results relevant for the scope of the present book.
