Ducts and Canals.—Prostheses implanted in the urinary tract have been discussed with reference to the use or potential use of poly(ethylene terephthalate), silicone rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, poly(vinyl chloride) and nylon. Experimental work on uretral and urethral replacement involves, principally, composites of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and silicone rubber. When heat-electric generating station turbine rotors are under operation there is a probability of forming surface cracks in axial canal and heat grooves. The sulfur-bearing cap rock, being an enclosed formation, is essentially the equivalent of a pressure vessel. Hot water, pumped into the formation to melt sulfur, must be withdrawn after cooling at approximately the same rate as it is put in, otherwise the pressure in the formation would increase to the point where further water injection would be impossible. Bleedwater weUs, used to extract water from the formations, usually are located on the flanks of the dome away from the mining area where the water temperature is lowest. The water is treated to remove soluble sulfides and other impurities before being discharged to disposal ditches or canals. [Pg.118]

In some places and under certain conditions, freshwater can be obtained more cheaply by desalination of seawater than by transporting water. This is tme when all the costs of extremely large monetary investments in dams, reservoirs, conduits, and pumps to move the water are considered. Before the rapid escalation of fuel costs between 1973 and 1980, the cost of desalination of seawater to adequately supply southern California would have been less than that of transport to the Peripheral Canal. This would have been the case even if there were an unlimited supply of water in the mountains of northern California, a condition that does not appear to exist. It has been shown that before 1973 a seacoast town could have been suppHed with 7-12 x lO" /d of freshwater more cheaply by desalination than by damming and piping water a distance of >160 km km (7). Indeed, the 1987—1992 drought in California has compelled the city of Santa Barbara to constmct a water desalination plant, and a 76,000-m /d plant is plaimed for the western coast of Florida (8). [Pg.236]

The demand for cement was stimulated by the growth of canal systems ia United States duting the nineteenth century. Pipe Lines For quantities of fluid which an economic investigation indicates are sufficiently large and continuous to justify the investment, pipe lines are one of the lowest-cost means of transportation. They have been built up to 1.22 m (48 in) or more in diameter and about 3200 km (2000 mi) in length for oil, gas, and other products. Water is usually not transported more than 160 to 320 km (100 to 200 miles), but the conduits may be much greater than 1.22 m (48 in) in diameter. Potable Water RO and NF both play a major role in providing potable water, defined either by the WHO criterion of <1000 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS) or the U.S. EPA limit of 500 ppm TDS. RO is most prominent in the Middle East and on islands where potable-water demand has outstripped natural supply. A plant awaiting startup at Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia produces over 1 mVs of fresh water (see Table 22-17). Small units are found on ships and boats. Seawater RO competes with multistage flash distillation (MSF) and multieffect distillation (MED) (see Sec. 13 Distillation ). It is too expensive to compete with conventional civil supply (canals, pipelines, w ls) in most locations. Low-pressure RO and NF compete with electrodialysis for the desalination of brackish water. The processes overlap economically, but they are sufficiently different so that the requirements of the application often favor one over the others. [Pg.2034]
