Schenectady Raihoad. He then worked for Croton Aqueduct and had an engineering job on the Erie Canal. At age 22, he was appointed first assistant engineer of the Navy. During the Mexican-American War, he served on a steam warship and a gunboat. [Pg.462]

Ely Samuel Parker attended two aeademies before entering the civil engineering profession at age 21 as assistant engineer on the west end of the Erie Canal. In 1851 he was promoted to first assistant making improvements on the Canal until 1855. With this experience, Parker had received his first major appointment as chief engineer of Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, a waterway commencing south of Norfolk VA, from where it went into Currituck Sound which, in turn, led to Albemarle Sound. Squire Whipple attended from 1822 until 1828 the academic schools of the District, and then entered the senior class of Union College, Schenectady NY, graduating in 1829. He then began civil engineering practice, first as a rodman, then as leveller of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and after two years was engaged on the surveys and computations for the enlargement of Erie Canal. From 1837 to 1850 he conducted numerous surveys of railroad and canal projects. His special talents laid, however, in the design and analysis of mechanical contrivances. [Pg.979]

Canvass White shipped as supereargo on a merchant vessel for Russia in 1811, and returned to the USA in 1814, after having served as enlisted man during the 1812 War. He made in 1817 an extended trip to Great Britain examining eanal eonstruction. After return to the USA he patented a waterproof cement in 1820.
