As shown in Table 8, U.S. distribution of oil and natural gas reserves is centered in Alaska, Cahfomia, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and the U.S. outer-continental shelf. Alaska reserves include both the Pmdhoe Bay deposits and the Cook Inlet fields. Cahfomia deposits include those in Santa Barbara, the Wilmington Eield, the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 at Bakersfield, and other offshore oil deposits. The Yates Pield, Austin Chalk formation, and Permian Basin are among the producing sources of petroleum and natural gas in Texas. [Pg.4]

Optical counters have been widely used to monitor cleanroom technology and particles in oil. Instmments manufactured by Royco Inc. (Menlo Park, California) are available for studying aerosols and particles in Hquids. The HIAC counter (HIAC Instmments, Monte Claire, California) is a widely used stream counter for particles in fluid. One of the more recently developed optical counters is available from Particle Sizing Systems (Santa Barbara, California). The configuration of one of the widely used counters, the Climet counter, is shown in Figure 16. A general review of photozone counters is available (3). [Pg.136]

In some places and under certain conditions, freshwater can be obtained more cheaply by desalination of seawater than by transporting water. This is tme when all the costs of extremely large monetary investments in dams, reservoirs, conduits, and pumps to move the water are considered. Before the rapid escalation of fuel costs between 1973 and 1980, the cost of desalination of seawater to adequately supply southern California would have been less than that of transport to the Peripheral Canal. This would have been the case even if there were an unlimited supply of water in the mountains of northern California, a condition that does not appear to exist. It has been shown that before 1973 a seacoast town could have been suppHed with 7-12 x lO" /d of freshwater more cheaply by desalination than by damming and piping water a distance of >160 km km (7). Indeed, the 1987—1992 drought in California has compelled the city of Santa Barbara to constmct a water desalination plant, and a 76,000-m /d plant is plaimed for the western coast of Florida (8). [Pg.236]

Most commercial marine diatomite deposits exploit accumulations resulting from large blooms of diatoms that occurred ia the oceans during the Miocene geological epoch. Diatomite sediments older than the Jurassic period are rare in the fossil record. Commercial deposits of diatomite are accumulations of the fossil skeletons, which can occur in beds as thick as 900 m in some locations (5). Marine deposits must have been formed on the bottom of protected basins or other bodies of quiet water, undisturbed by strong currents, in an environment similar to the existing Santa Barbara Channel or Gulf of California (3,6). [Pg.56]

California contains the largest formation of diatomite in the United States the Monterey Formation extends from Point Arena in Mendocino County in the north to San Onofre in the south (7). The most extensive deposit is near Lompoc, Santa Barbara County, and is of marine origin. A freshwater deposit is being mined near Burney, Shasta County. Other important deposits (not mined as of this writing) are located in Monterey, Fresno, Inyo, Kem, Orange, San Bemadino, San Joaquin, Sonoma, and San Luis Obispo counties. [Pg.56]

Oil Spills. Oil spills occur from oil pipeline leaks, oil tanker accidents, or submarine oil drilling operations. The two major ocean drilling accidents—oil wells blowing out—were the 1969 Santa Barbara Channel spill and the 1979 Yucatan Peninsula spill, in Mexico. The Yucatan spill spewed out more than three million barrels before being capped in 1980. Both caused damage to beaches and marine life, but the smaller Santa Barbara spill was far more devastating because of unfavorable winds following the accident. [Pg.479]

The Santa Barbara Olive Company, a twenty-year-old condiments company in California with twenty-five drink-related items, now has sales of more than 1 million a month, up 23 percent from 2001. The company is moving aggressively into mainstream supermarkets like Safeway and Piggly Wiggly, where awareness of the fashionability of cocktail accessories like olives is expanding most rapidly. [Pg.186]
