Forcing Structures Consider the Boolean OR function. Note that the value of cti or CT2 is fixed as 1 whenever either a or C2 is equal to 1. Kauffman calls any function with the property that at least one value of at least one of its inputs fixes its output, a canalizing function [kauff84]. The Boolean functions OR and AND , for example, are both canalizing functions, but the EXCLUSIVE OR function is not. [Pg.432]

The spinal cord is classically divided into white and grey matter (Fig. 21.2). The grey matter can be organised into ten different laminae, which run continuously along the entire length of the spinal cord. Within a given section of a spinal cord, each lamina can be seen as a layer of functionally distinct cells. Laminae I to VI comprise the dorsal horn, laminae VII to IX the ventral horn, and lamina X is the substantia grisea centralis which surrounds the central canal. [Pg.460]

Ancillary treatments such as humidifiers, vaporizers, and saline nasal sprays or drops are used to moisturize the nasal canal and impair crusting of secretions along with promoting ciliary function. Although many patients report benefit from such therapies, there are no controlled studies that support their use.32,34,36... [Pg.1069]

Over recent years a variety of new helical canal inclusion systems have been discovered and characterised, and an increasing awareness has developed of the roles played by canal topology and helicity in the function of certain biological systems. [Pg.145]

We concentrate here on the structural aspects of helical canal inclusion compounds, primarily because this field of chemical inclusion is still at the relatively juvenile stage of establishing geometry and geometrical Variables. Comments on structure-property relationships for the chemical systems and on structure-function relationships for the biochemical systems are made wherever possible. [Pg.146]

The plasmodesmata may be aggregated in primary pit fields or in the pit membranes between pit pahs. The plasmodesmata appear as narrow canals (2 pm) lined by a plasma membrane and are traversed by a des-motubule, a tubule of endoplasmic reticulum. The plasmodemata are dynamic altering their dimensions and are functionally diverse. For example, whereas some transport endogenous plant transcription factors, others transport numerous proteins from companion cells to enucleated sieve elements. [Pg.21]

Although the vomeronasal system is specialized to detect stimuli in a liquid environment, it probably is not functional in utero, at least in mice. Fluorescent microspheres were not taken up by the vomeronasal organ as the access canal is not open yet in utero. In rats, by contrast, the canal is open before birth and the microspheres can be taken up. The olfactory epithelium of the main olfactory system plays a greater role prenatally, as evidenced by the uptake of radiolabeled 2-deoxyglucose (Coppola and Coltrane 1994). Fetal mice respond to amyl acetate and isovaleric acid delivered into the nasal cavity through a tiny cannula (Coppola, 2001). In both rats and mice, the main olfactory system, and not the vomeronasal system, appears to mediate prenatal olfaction (Coppola, 2001). [Pg.234]

Several lines of investigation assert to the inability of canal ine to function as an effective ornithine antagonist. Ornithine interaction with canaline has been evaluated with the ornithine carbamoyl transferase (EC 2.1.3.3) of human liver. Neither canal ine nor ornithine inhibited this enzyme when the other member of this set served as the carbamoyl group recipient (29). The ornithine antagonist, 2,4-diaminobutyric acid drastically reduced urea production in the rat this reflected curtailment of the ornithine carbamoyl transferase-mediated conversion of ornithine to citrulline. Yet, canaline had no such effect on urea formation in this mammal (30). [Pg.288]

Structures of the anterior chamber of the eye. Tissues with significant autonomic functions and the associated ANS receptors are shown in this schematic diagram. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body, flows into the space in front of the iris, flows through the trabecular meshwork, and exits via the canal of Schlemm arrow). Blockade of the 13 adrenoceptors associated with the ciliary epithelium causes decreased secretion of aqueous. Blood vessels (not shown) in the sclera are also under autonomic control and influence aqueous drainage. [Pg.126]
