The iron absorption is inhibited in the presence of carbonates, oxalates and phosphates. Probably they participate in macromolecular polymer formation, which are not absorbable from alimentary canal. [Pg.218]

Alimentary canal sympathetic dilates, parasympathetic constricts, especially the rectum (see effect of D.F.P. in treatment of post-operative paralytic ileus, p. 196). Furthermore, parasympathetic stimulates glandular secretion. [Pg.46]

As it is the outer surface of the virus particle, whether nucleocapsid or envelope, that first makes contact with the membrane of the host cell, its structure and properties are of vital importance in understanding the process of infection. In general, naked (envelope-free) viruses are resistant and survive well in the outside world they may also be bile-resistant, allowing infection through the alimentary canal. Enveloped viruses are more susceptible to environmental factors such as drying, gastric acidity, and bile. These differences in susceptibility influence the ways in which these viruses can be transmitted. [Pg.192]

Many drugs are administered as parenterals for speed of action because the patient is unable to take oral medication or because the drug is a macromolecule such as a protein that is unable to be orally absorbed intact due to stability and permeability issues. The U.S. Pharmacopoeia defines parenteral articles as preparations intended for injection through the skin or other external boundary tissue, rather than through the alimentary canal. They include intravenous, intramuscular, or subcutaneous injections. Intravenous injections are classified as small volume (<100 mL per container) or large volume (>100 mL per container) injections. The majority of parenteral dosage forms are supplied as ready-to-use solutions or reconstituted into solutions prior to administration. Suspension formulations may also be used,101 although their use is more limited to a subcutaneous (i.e., Novolin Penfill NOVO Nordisk) or intramuscular (i.e., Sandostatin LAR Depot Novartis) injection. Intravenous use of disperse systems is possible but limited (i.e., Doxil Injection Ortho Biotec). [Pg.39]

Regulation of virulence as well as conjugal transfer of DNA by peptide signaling seems to be important in many G- - bacteria including bacilli that have not been discussed in this review. Bacteriocin production in LAB is considered as a positive trait in environments such as food and alimentary canal and they are often regulated by PP-dependent three-component regulatory systems. [Pg.317]

From the mid esophagus to the anus, smooth muscle surrounds the alimentary canal and is responsible for active movement and segmentation of intestinal contents. This smooth muscle, which lies in the muscularis propria, consists of a circular and a longitudinal layer of muscle. [Pg.471]

Fecal softeners are substances that are not absorbed from the alimentary canal and act by increasing the bulk of the feces and softening the stool so that it is easier to pass. Mineral oil has been in use for many years, either as the oil or as a white emulsion it is a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons. Its use has been criticized for many reasons. It dissolves the fat-soluble vitamins and prevents their absorption. It is itself absorbed slightly and appears in the mesenteric lymph nodes, and if it is... [Pg.474]

Tapeworm. A parasitic intestinal cestode worm having a flattened, band-like form. The eggs of tapeworms are ingested by the intermediate host, they produce the larval stage in tissues. When the flesh of intermediate host is eaten, the larvae develop within the alimentary canal of the definitive host into adult tapeworms. [Pg.576]

The cross-over study was carried out in two parts. In the first part the subjects were fasted overnight and at 8 a.m. took one capsule with 100 ml of tap water, Food was subsequently withheld for 3 h, after which a standard lunch was served. Blood was sampled (10 ml) just before and 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 32 h after dosage. Immediately following each blood sample (except at 0 and 32 h) an X-ray photograph was taken to determine the position of the pellets in the gastrointestinal tract. The X-ray photographs were taken in the supine position and the sites of the alimentary canal numbered as in Table 1. [Pg.126]
