Cable scrap

Metal recovery from industrial waste has recently been shown [101] to be an active area of magnetic field applications, the base system ranging from mine-waste to cable scrap. Fe, Co, Nl, Cr, Mn, Mo, Tl, Va, W, Ta, U, rare-earth metals and precious metals are the most obvious candidates for recovery in magnetic fields, although other substances, e.g. Zn, Pb, Mg, Ca, have also been the subject of successful recovery studies [e.g. 71]. [Pg.608]

A rising current separator that provides for the separation of PE, PVC and copper in comminuted cable scrap has also been described [10], see Figure 7. [Pg.365]

Several firms recycle PVC wire and cable insulation, primarily from the telecommunications industry. The recovered material typically contains small amounts of metal, so it is suitable only for applications that do not require high purity, such as truck mud flaps, flower pots, traffic stops, and reflective bibs for construction workers. The source of most of the material is phone and business equipment wiring that is being replaced by fiber optic cable. One such company is Philip Environmental, in Hamilton, Ontario, which recycles about 125 million pounds per year of the approximately 500 million pounds of wire and cable scrap generated in North America. It purifies the material and resells it for use in products such as car floor mats, truck mud flaps, and sound-deadening panels for cars. ... [Pg.737]

The principal types of scrap are battery plates and paste, drosses, skimmings, and industrial scrap such as solders, babbitts, cable sheathing, etc. [Pg.48]

The secondary production of lead begins with the recovery of old scrap from worn-out, damaged, or obsolete products and with new scrap. The chief source of old scrap is lead-acid batteries other sources include cable coverings, pipe, sheet, and other lead-bearing metals. Solder, a tin-based alloy, may be recovered from the processing of circuit boards for use as lead charge. [Pg.131]

Scrap steel In some fortunate instances a disused pipeline or other metal structure in close proximity to the project requiring cathodic protection may be used. However, it is essential in cases of scrap steel or iron groundbeds to ensure that the steelwork is completely electrically continuous, and multiple cable connections to various parts of the groundbed must be used to ensure a sufficient life. Preferential corrosion can take place in the vicinity of cable connections resulting in early electrical disconnection, hence the necessity for multiple connections. [Pg.208]

Install data capture devices such as PCs and balance key pads and printers outside of the isolator. Custom cabling may have to be made to accomplish this, but it minimizes the amount of equipment in the isolator and, if these devices malfunction or need repair, they are easily accessible and do not require decontamination. In general, due to the nature of analytical instrumentation, if equipment inside the isolator needs to be repaired, it must either be done inside of the isolator or the equipment must be scrapped and replaced. For large equipment, it might be worthwhile cutting the covers or service panels and reattaching them in such a manner that they can more easily be removed if service is needed prior to placing them in the isolator. [Pg.423]

Process performance and commercial status. The Akzo process was investigated on a pilot scale (30 kg/h) with PVC cable and pipe scrap. Some tests with mixed PVC waste were carried out on a larger scale (300 kg/h) with the support of the European Council of Vinyl Manufacturers, giving promising results. At the moment the project is on hold, even though there is a plan to realize an industrial-scale plant, with a capacity of about 50000 t/yr. On the other hand, Akzo Nobel has stopped all activities on HCl recycling from PVC [50]. The process is still at pilot-scale status, so that large uncertainty exists about its technical, enviromnental and economic performance. [Pg.469]

WATER OR moisture AWAY FROM THE MOLD AND HOT LEAD. Water will cause the melted lead to explode. Scrounge lead from wheelwelghts at the gas station, sewer pipe joints tn houses being torn down, the lead sheath around telephone cable, and scraps of solder. Sometimes you can buy scrap lead from Junk dealers. [Pg.82]

Pyrolysis can be used for the thermal decomposition of waste materials that are predominantly organic in nature, e.g. scrap tyres, scrap cables, waste plastics, shredder wastes, and acid sludge. Rotary kilns are particularly suitable as universally applicable pyrolysis units for continuous operation. Highly aromatic pyrolysis oils for use as chemical raw materials are obtained at reactor temperatures of about 700 °G. Such pyrolysis oils could form the basis for the production of aromatics such as benzene, naphthalene, and their homologues, thermoplastic hydrocarbon resins and precursors of industrial carbon, when the proven processes for the refining of coal tar and crude benzene are applied. [Pg.462]

Hydraulic structures using scrap tires for bank protection include tire mats, revetment (retaining walls, seawalls, revet mattresses), and tire-concrete imits. In search for economical bank-protection structures, the use of scarp tires as a less-expensive alternative is desirable, considering the costs of the metal and concrete used in reinforced-concrete construction, especially in developing countries. Whole scrap tires can be utilized for surface erosion control, beach and slope protection, and stream bank stabilization. In these applications, scrap tires are banded together and partially or completely buried on imstable slopes. Tires can be used with other stabilization materials to reinforce an unstable highway shoulder or protect a channel slope remained stable and can provide economical and immediate solutions. In bank protection structures, tires are laced together by steel cables and used as a protective layer or mat over stream banks or soil embankments. The top, toe, upstream and downstream ends of the mattress are tied into the banks. Used tires with metal cords were shown to bean excellent construction material that can partially replace reinforced concrete for protection of river banks and canal walls [19]. [Pg.193]

Normal recirculation, in the same process, of the clean PVC scrap generated (e.g., edge trim in calendering) is widely practiced, in particular with PVC for noncritical applications. General PVC scrap, both from internal and external sources, is also converted by some processors into such products as cheap garden hose or core composition for cables. [Pg.726]

Some post-consumer PVC sources are water, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic bottles, and film. Another significant source of post-consumer PVC is used electric cable, coming principally fi om plant demolition and, to a lesser degree, from manufacturing scrap and offcuts. [Pg.728]
