Protection of Structures

Cathodic metallic coatings should not be used on submerged and underground simetures subject to physical damage and abrasion. [Pg.364]

Areas of struetural metals affected by cavitation can be surfaced with welding wire or strip, overlay welding, or eoating with dense high-tensUe materials that resist cavitation damage (e.g. chromium stainless steel 18-8). [Pg.364]

Thermal-sprayed eoatings are not homogeneous isotropic entities, and they do not have the same properties as identical bulk materials  [Pg.364]

Perform detailed analysis of local environmental conditions prior to undertaking activities appertaining to selection of protective systems. [Pg.364]

Weathering, etching, hot phosphating, or priming with calcium plumbate should be specified prior to application of sealer or paint on top of galvanizing. [Pg.364]

The application of sacrificial anodes for the protection of structures requires the development of suitable anode materials for the exposure environment. Screening tests enable the rapid selection of materials which show potential as candidates for the given application. These tests may typically use a single parameter (e.g. operating potential at a defined constant current density) as a pass/fail criterion and are normally of short duration (usually hours) with test specimen weights of the order of hundreds of grams. The tests are not intended to simulate field conditions precisely. [Pg.151]

Sprayed coatings These are of the greatest importance, particularly for the protection of structural steel or certain aluminium alloys. The metal to be coated must be grit blasted shortly before spraying to provide a clean rough surface. Chilled iron grit is used for most steelwork, while alumina or silicon... [Pg.465]

The main application of sprayed aluminium is for the protection of structural steel, and the process can also be utilised to protect high-strength aluminium alloys. The process has the important advantage that it can be carried out on site. [Pg.473]

Aluminium coatings are not favoured in atmospheres containing explosive mixtures because contact with rusty steel can cause incendiary sparking, and for this reason aluminium coatings are not used for protection of structures in coalmines (cf. CP 2008 1966). [Pg.475]

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a very important biopolymer with the function of storage and transmission of genetic information. In this reason the protection of structural integrity and functional activity of DNA is essential for the viability of living systems, as well as the effectiveness of laboratory DNA-technics. [Pg.196]

Zinc dust coatings are utilized in large quantities for the protection of structural steel, also including underwater steel construction and ship building [5.56]. Zinc dust is used in organic and inorganic binder systems (alkali silicates, ethyl silicates) [5.56, 5.105]. [Pg.226]

Table VII shows three asphalt coatings used In thicknesses comparable to Industrial paints. Film thicknesses are from 0.7 to 3 mils. These coatings find wide use In Industry for the protection of structural steel, for the protection of metal parts In storage (removable with solvents), and as pipe and tank coatings. The aluminum pigmented coating has two main advantages aluminum appearance Is more desirable than black, and the pigment protects the bitumen from the actinic rays, thereby extending the life of the coatings. An extremely fire-resistant coating material designed for spray applications to onshore and offshore oil and gas facilities has been introduced by Hempel s Marine Paints. The product, called ContraFlam 3810, is easy to apply and is particularly well-suited to the protection of structural steel work, walls, and floors. Another coating of a surface hardener/weather barrier material, such as Contraflam Topclad 3811, can then be applied followed by a color coat. [Pg.795]

Innovative seismic control systems belongs to the world of the vibration control techniques of structures, which includes passive, semi-active, active and hybrid systems (Housner et al., 1997 Spencer, 2003 Christopoulos and Filiatrault, 2007). The experiences acquired during experimental activities and worldwide apvplications have indicated the passive control techniques as the most suitable solutions for the seismic protection of structures. These systems modify the stiffness and/or the dissipative properties of the structure, favoring the reduction of the dynamic response to seismic actions. They can be classified on the basis of... [Pg.230]

For protection of structures in seawater, platinum-clad copper, 2% Ag—Pb, platinized titanium, or platinized niobium have been recommended as corrosion-resistant anodes using impressed current [10-12]. Whereas sacrificial magnesium anodes require replacement approximately every 2 years, the 2% Ag—Pb anodes are estimated to last more than 10 years, and the 90% Pt-10% Ir anodes still... [Pg.258]

An alloy of 2% Ag-Pb is used as a corrosion-resistant anode in impressed current systems for cathodic protection of structures in seawater (see Section 13.6) [4]. Alloying with 6-12% Sb increases strength [only at temperatures <120 °C (<250°F)] of the otherwise weak metal, but corrosion resistance of the alloy in some media is below that of pure lead. [Pg.446]
