Business reaction

Business Reaction. In July 1986, Safeway Stores, Inc., the nation s largest grocery chain, announced that it would stop buying apples treated with the chemical growth regulator Alar, despite EPA s decision in January to allow its use while further studies are done. In addition, the state of Maine proposed a non-detectable standard for daminozide to be reached this year, and the state of Massachusetts has enacted regulation to reduce Alar in baby foods and heat-processed foods to a non-detectable level by 1988. (Wall Street Journal, 1986). [Pg.390]

Business Reaction. In November 1986, the H. J. Heinz Co. announced that it was planning to restrict the purchase of crops used in the manufacture of baby foods that had been treated with certain pesticides. Heinz listed 12 chemicals alachlor,... [Pg.390]

Data should be available at every phase of the service quality loop from soliciting business through client reaction and feedback. The collection and analysis of data is a means of improving the service or conversely can detect the onset of an insidious degradation of the service before it becomes a major issue. [Pg.197]

There is persisting interest in nylon-RIM materials as alternatives to polyurethane-RIM. Advantages of the nylon materials are the better shelf life and lower viscosity of the reaction components, ability to mould thick-walled articles, absence of a need for mould lubrication and the ability to avoid using isocyanates with their associated hazards. The main disadvantages of nylon-RIM are the need to have heated storage tanks and elevated temperature reactions, difficulties in catalyst handling and the high water absorption of the product. Possible markets include exterior car body components and appliance and business machine components. [Pg.504]

Now let us talk with the business manager. He thinks in terms of gains and losses. He is likely to observe that the consumption of coal and water to generate water gas is followed by the combustion of the water gas to form carbon dioxide and water. Without knowing much chemistry, he can see that what is finally accomplished is the combustion of coal to form carbon dioxide. The overall reaction is obtained by adding reactions (7), (2), and (5) ... [Pg.109]

The business manager is frugal so he asks, Why not burn the coal directly and save the cost ot manufacturing the water gas The mechanical engineer is practical so he asks, How much heat will the boiler receive if I use coal instead of water gas The chemical engineer goes to the laboratory to find the answers by measuring the heat released per mole of carbon burned in reaction (4). The laboratory result shows that reaction (4) releases 94.0 kcal/mole ... [Pg.109]

This chapter is a review of the CVD of non-metallic elements and covers boron, silicon, and germanium. Silicon and germanium are borderline elements with metalloid characteristics. Both are important semiconductor materials, particularly silicon, which forms the backbone of the largest business in the world the electronic industry. All three materials are deposited by CVD on an industrial scale and a wide variety of CVD reactions are available. [Pg.217]

The study of reaction mechanisms can be a subtle business but in fact the mechanistic basis of classification into step and chain processes arises from major differences in the two types of process. There is no doubt about the nature of the reaction in almost all cases as can be seen by considering the distinguishing features of the two mechanisms which are summarised below. [Pg.23]

There are over 400 different commercial alkyd resin formulations based on phthalic anhydride used in the coatings business. Alkyd resins for paints are made by reacting phthalic anhydride with a poly-alcohol (usually from naturally occurring sources rather than synthetic) that contains unreacted double bonds. The paint dries by the resin crosslinking through reaction of the double bonds under the influence of oxygen in the air. [Pg.146]

We should not minimize the effects that electronic searching of patents has had on the business of research. In 1990, CAS introduced MARPAT, which is a database of Markush (generic) structures found in patent documents [1]. This database provided a valuable tool for patent searching in a more comprehensive way than had been available previously. In 1995, CAS launched SciFinder, which provided access to the patent literature for chemists on their desktops. Using the SciFinder interface, one may search for research topics, authors, companies, or structures/reactions. From a practical viewpoint, SciFinder did more to enhance the searching capabilities of the medicinal chemist than any other tool. Even today, SciFinder continues to provide a first pass through the patent literature when chemists want to include patents in their searching. Indeed, when a search is performed, patent references are included in the answer set. Only very recently have there been additional tools to search the patent literature that have found widespread use. [Pg.303]

GSH (because of the sulfhydryl group of its cysteine, which is the business part of the molecule). A number of potentially toxic electrophilic xenobiotics (such as certain carcinogens) are conjugated to the nucleophilic GSH in reactions that can be represented as follows ... [Pg.629]

The business of the chemicai industry is to transform inexpensive substances into more valuable ones. In many cases, catalysts play important roles in these processes. Here, we describe the roles of catalysts in some important industrial reactions. Other catalyzed industrial reactions are considered in Chapter where we describe properties of chemical equilibria. [Pg.1107]

This is also (see [R 6]) a commercial chip ( Radiator ), provided by MCS, Micro Chemical Systems Ltd., The Deep Business Center [20]. A bottom plate contains an extensively wound serpentine channel. A top plate covers this microstructure. The two reactant solutions enter via capillary tubing through holes in the top plate. The first reactant is fed at the start of the serpentine path and the second enters this path in a short distance. Shortly before the end of the serpentine, a third stream can enter which may serve, e.g., for dilution and thus quenching of the reaction. After a very short passage, the diluted streams enter via a fourth port analytics. Commercially available capillary connectors were employed. [Pg.387]

The fine chemicals business is characterized by a small volume of products manufactured. Therefore, batch production predominates and small-scale reactors are used. The need to implement fine chemistry processes into existing multiproduct plants often forces the choice of batch reactors. However, safety considerations may lead to the choice of continuous processing in spite of the small scale of operation. The inventory of hazardous materials must be kept low and this is achieved only in smaller continuous reactors. Thermal mnaways are less probable in continuous equipment as proven by statistics of accidents in the chemical industries. For short reaction times, continuous or semicontinuous operation is preferred. [Pg.382]

Explain why it would not be practical to air-condition a home or business by using an endothermic chemical reaction. [Pg.124]

As the chemical industry expanded, Perkin continued his own scientific research in the peace of his private laboratory. He had not lost his touch. Among the synthetic methods he discovered is one now called the Perkin reaction. He used it to make a synthetic substitute for a vegetable substance called coumarin, which has a pleasant, vanillalike odor. Coumarin spawned the synthetic perfume business and made luxurious scents available to all. Once again, a Perkin chemical started a new industry, albeit a modest one in comparison with dyes and pharmaceuticals. Despite the worldwide impact of Perkins discoveries, he was not knighted by the British monarchy until 1906, the fiftieth anniversary of his discovery of mauve. The world chemistry community feted him lavishly that year, and he traveled to the United States collecting further honors. A year later, at the age of 69, he died peacefully, at home. [Pg.28]

These were the years when whatever could be made could be sold at a profit. The United States was involved in a world war followed by a postwar business boom and the Korean War. Then came 1958. The Korean War had been over for five years. The United States was in the midst of a major recession.. The chemical industry that previously could do no wrong found that all of a sudden its profits were declining rapidly. A blow to the pocketbook causes a speedy reaction. A couple of major chemical concerns responded by firing 10% of salaried employees. This was the end of an era. [Pg.9]

Finally, we are in the business to produce products and profits. Broadly, if a product is made in 3-4 reaction steps in the batch-manufacturing environment, the market value should be 10 times the materials. If market value is only twice the raw material cost, the project should be redefined or stopped. In a 10-step process, it is not uncommon that materials are 1/20 of the selling price. A comparison of a two reaction step product using discounted cash flow methods (11) showed that a process with a market value 4 times the materials was greatly preferred over one at 3 times materials. [Pg.323]

The increasing interest for HDN reaction is due to environmental push and business pull. The degradation of nitrogen compounds to ammonia and hydrocarbons consumes more hydrogen than any other hydrotreating reaction, and therefore any improvement in the efficiency of HDN catalysis would produce an immediate business advantage. [Pg.105]
