In the view of classical economics, entrepreneurship involves the redirection and mobilization of capital and human resources to form a new economic activity. Today, the term entrepreneurship generally refers exclusively to starting a new company, while launching a radically new line of business within an existing firm is sometimes called intrapreneurship or, more simply, innovation [20].

Many firms tend to staff their technical service efforts with personnel that have experience solely in the particular business involved. Significant capital expenditure usually represents a substantial commitment of the resources of a business, both financially and in terms of man-hours. It is therefore incumbent upon management to ensure that proposals for such outlays receive proper and full consideration of all the relevant implications before implementation. Once policies as to levels of authorization and commitment are laid down, there should follow the formal appraisal of the financial effects of the proposal. These can be formulated only after detailed discussion with the appropriate departments as to all the physical, technical and environmental factors involved in making the final decision. Given the scope and impact of formulated products, tools are needed to help chemical choosers - whether product developers or purchasers - to identify chemicals with desirable characteristics from the hazard perspective and to determine how the use of a particular chemical will affect the overall hazard profile or greenness of a product. We focus in particular on pubhcly available tools and resources that can support small businesses who may not have extensive environmental health and safety resources but who seek to green their chemical products and inventories.

This chapter provides an introduction to the pharmaceutical sector, and the business of developing new active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). Crystallization is the preferred method of isolating commercial API products because it offers a highly efficient means of purification. The crystallization process is also where the physical properties of the drug substance are defined. Particularly in industries structured in small enterprises with limited nsers know-how and a wide range of chemicals apphcations, the field service of preparations manufactnrers or the trade have a central role in conveying product information and in advising on apphcations. In particular the chemicals business and the formulators could also expand their bnsiness areas to include information and consultation services (with the associated cnstomer retention). 

It is also important to consider communication along the supply chains as a chance for more customer-orientated iimovation. In particular, chemical traders and the formulators of preparations could expand their areas of business by adding information and consultative services (with improved customer retention).
