Building/construction constructional applications

Selection of fans and ducting for local extract must be more rigorous than for other systems. The fan must be capable of withstanding abrasion or corrosion from the contaminants, and if they are flammable must have a flameproof or out-of-air stream motor. The ducting also must be able to withstand abrasion or corrosion and must be fully sealed to prevent escape of contaminants within the building. For specialist applications such as fume cupboard extract, ducting and fans are often of plastic construction. [Pg.430]

Wood is one of the oldest constructional materials. Historically it was important in world exploration and trade, and the defence of that trade, in the provision of merchant ships and navies. It was also important in the early days of railway engineering and in building construction. Although in many applications wood has been replaced by other materials, this renewable resource now supports the growing industries of manufactured wood products. Prominent amongst these are the panel materials chipboard, flake-board, strandboard, plywood and blockboard, hardboard and softboard, wood-cement products and the products of the very large pulp and paper industries. [Pg.957]

Sources of land pollution include direct dumping of domestic and industrial solid waste, excessive application of agrochemicals, and indirect contamination resulting from leaks or from leaching of hazardous components from liquid waste disposal sites or from atmospheric fallout. Land may also become contaminated by chemicals processed, stored or dumped at the site, perhaps in the distant past. Such contamination may pose a health risk to workers on the site, those subsequently involved in building, construction or engineering works, or the public (e.g. arising from trespass), and to animals. [Pg.345]

In the study of a discoloured ancient wood from a Buddhist building constructed before or during the eighth century AD, concentrations show the same kind of evolution. Moreover, the levels of extractives in the ancient wood are comparable to those in recently cut wood, meaning that they do not undergo degradation in the ancient wood. The method developed on recently cut wood is then applicable to old discoloured wood. [Pg.445]

The main application sector by far is the building construction sector, which consumes more than two-thirds of all PVC. Then there are multiple applications in packaging, electrical electronics (EE), home and leisure, medical, automotive, industry. .. [Pg.312]

SS-LINKED POLYMERS ARE USED in a wide variety of aerospace, automotive, building construction, and consumer product applications. Not all paints, adhesives, composites, and elastomers are cross-linked, but cross-linking systems are often used in these applications when resistance to solvents, resistance to high temperatures, and high mechanical performance are required. These important properties can be traced directly to the three-dimensional interconnected molecular network that is characteristic of cross-linked systems. [Pg.1]

Limitations on the use of sulphur concrete are imposed by its high temperature and fire susceptibility. Although it will not sustain combustion, under applied flame the sulphur will burn to produce SO2. At temperatures above the melting point of sulphur, the product loses structural integrity. Thus sulphur concrete is best suited for outdoor and underground use as well as indoor construction applications where fire hazard is not a concern and building codes are not applied. [Pg.131]

The improved performance of SC over PCC is of importance not only in the applications such as corrosive industrial situations, but also in certain regular construction applications. In some areas of the world, the mineral aggregates available locally do not produce a PCC capable of withstanding the climate conditions. However, those aggregates may be used in SC to give durable building materials. Examples of this aspect of the use of sulfur concretes are sulfur concrete block projects developed by Ortega... [Pg.243]

Miscellaneous Applications. There are many such uses, some of which will be questioned as engineering. Some of these applications include building construction, luggage, safety-helmets, seating, kitchen utensils, rope and strapping, shoe parts, rollers, furniture, and even dentures. This list can go on almost indefinitely and the plastics used, reflecting desired properties, will vary widely. [Pg.15]

Specialty Glass Products. Foam glass insulation and glass building blocks are two specialty glass products with construction applications. [Pg.325]

The successful application of time-temperature superposition for polystyrene foam is particularly significant in that it allows prediction of long-term behavior from short-term measurements. This is of interest in building and construction applications. [Pg.665]

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program to evaluate the effectiveness of using recycled fibers from carpet waste for concrete reinforcement. It also discusses issues that need to be addressed for the application of such FRC in large scale construction projects. It then reports on a building construction project using carpet waste fiber reinforced concrete. The results suggest that using carpet industrial waste fibers in construction would not only improve the reliability and life of the concrete structure, it but also could reduce the landfill spaces needed to dispose the waste material. [Pg.223]

NASA s Langley Research Center developed a novel approach to providing accurate, uniform cost-effective specifications which can be readily updated to incorporate new building technologies. Called SPECSINTACT, it is a computerized system accessible to all NASA centers involved in construction programs. The system contains a comprehensive catalog of master specifications applicable to many types of building construction. [Pg.67]

Solvent-based adhesives, two-component epoxy resin adhesives, two-component methacrylates for assembly purposes (priming, filling, smoothing, sealing, etc.) For these applications, a multitude of so-called building/ construction adhesives is commercially available. [Pg.123]
