The Merchant Shipping Act 1995 is an Act to consolidate the Merchant Shipping Acts 1894 to 1994 and other enactments relating to merchant shipping. It is in 13 Parts and covers the registration and operation of British ships and seamen. Part III -Masters and Seamen, contains a section on safety, health and welfare in terms of conditions for crew. Part IV - Safety, contains general guidance on safety and health on ships. The Jones Act (46 U.S.C. 688(a)) allows injured sailors receive proper damages from their employers for the negligence of the ship owner, the captain, or fellow members of the crew. The act, which is part of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (updated in 2006), is also used to control the use of foreign vessels in US waters.
