An elementary introduction to chemistry is given in Chapter 3 this serves only to provide background and for more advanced consideration reference will be necessary to specific text books, e.g. as listed in the Bibliography. A brief discussion of the relevance of physicochemical principles to hazard identification is given in Chapter 4. Relevant toxic and flammable properties, and summaries of appropriate precautions to cater for them during handling, use and disposal, are provided in Chapters 5 and 6, respectively. Reactive hazards are discussed in Chapter 7. The special problems with cryogenic materials and chemicals under pressure, typified by compressed... 

In the following sections it is proposed to discuss the more important of the above methods in somewhat greater detail. For a more complete treatment the reader is referred to the special treatises on the subject (see the selected Bibliography in Section 21.27). 

For atoms with more than two electrons, it is very difficult to obtain such a small absolute error in the energy as in the helium case, but, within an isoelectronic sequence, the relative error will, of course, go down rapidly with increasing atomic number Z. The method of superposition of configurations has been used successfully in a number of applications, particularly by Boys (1950-) and Jucys (1947-), and, for a more detailed survey of the work on atoms, we will refer to the special table on atomic calculations in the bibliography. This is a field of rapid development, where one can expect important new results within the next few years. 

A great deal of work has later been carried out in order to simplify and refine the wave function for the H2 molecule, and, for a more detailed survey, we will refer to a special table in the bibliography. There is little doubt that, even as to the H2 molecule, one can in due time expect a similar development as is now going on concerning the He atom, and, since the former is being complicated also by the nuclear motion involved, several new interesting problems will probably appear. 

In the bibliography, we have tried to concentrate the interest on contributions going beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation, and papers on the self-consistent field method itself have therefore not been included, unless they have also been of value from a more general point of view. However, in our treatment of the correlation effects, the Hartree-Fock scheme represents the natural basic level for study of the further improvements, and it is therefore valuable to make references to this approximation easily available. For atoms, there has been an excellent survey given by Hartree, and, for solid-state, we would like to refer to some recent reviews. PLASTEC. The Plastics Technical Evaluation Center (PLASTEC) is one of approximately 20 technical information analysis centers sponsored by the US Dept of Defense (DoD) to provide the defense community with a variety of authoritative information services. Located at the Armament Research Development Command -(ARRADCOM), Dover, NJ, PLASTEC has been serving this community since 1960 via state-of-the-art reports, handbooks, newsletters, current awareness studies, engineering assistance, bibliographies, literature searches, technical inquiries and special investigations on plastics, composites and adhesives... 

In developing this short bibliography of advanced ESR methods we have tried to select references primarily from widely available journals, review series and books published after 1990. We have therefore avoided references to meeting abstracts or highly specialized journals with low circulation or earlier publications where the methods were first demonstrated. Citations to these pioneering papers are found in the references.

Special Tubes A variety of special forms of the pitot tube have been evolved. Folsom (loc. cit.) gives a description of many of these special types together with a comprehensive bibliography. Included are the impact tube for boundary-layer measurements and shielded total-pressure tubes. The latter are insensitive to angle of attack up to 40°. 

Protection of iron from corrosion by zinc or tin coatings is based on a very small corrosion current density at large areas of these metals so that the whole electrode is brought to potentials where iron (in small areas, for instance pores) is protected and cannot dissolve. It is beyond the scope of the present chapter to discuss corrosion and passivation in detail and the reader is referred to specialized bibliography [142—143]. 

Utilization of data obtained from various plasma sources (e.g. beam-foil, tokamak and laser-produced plasma [287]) enabled the identification with high accuracy of the lines of highly ionized atoms in solar spectra. A special commision No 14 on Atomic and Molecular Data of the International Astronomical Union coordinates the activity on systematization of spectroscopic data, informs the astrophysics community on new developments and provides assessments and recommendations. It also provides reports which highlight these new developments and list all important recent literature references on atomic spectra and wavelength standards, energy level analyses, line classifications, compilations of laboratory data, databases and bibliographies. 

Another dynamic measurement is the LCEC technique which can he thought of, simplistically, as FIA using a chromatographic column positioned between the sample injection port and the detector. Bioanalytical systems (BAS) of West Lafayette, Indiana, specializes in instrumentation for LCEC. Their catalogs come with extensive bibliographies covering a variety of applications.
