A vaginal solution with iodinated povidone is best delivered as a stable concentrate, for instance Betadine -solution 100 mg/mL. The patient should dilute the concentrate ten times in an irrigator. The indication is fluor vaginalis with clinically evident inflammation but without a microbiological diagnosis. 

Under ether anesthesia, the abdominal skin of a diabetic Wistar rat was closely shaved and swabbed with a 10% Betadine solution. A midline cut was made, and a subcutaneous pocket 3 cm from the incision was created sideways by blunt dissection. An 1/8 piece of the pellet disc containing 20% insulin was inserted and the wound was closed by two Michel clips. The whole procedure required about 3 min, and the animal recovered in less than 1 min thereafter. 

Antimicrobial agents can be combined with a suitable thickening and gelling agent to prepare creams and ointments with antimicrobial properties. For example, Betadine Solution and Betadine Cream contain 10 and 5% povidone-iodine respectively. It has been shown that these products are effective against MRS A. 

Hospitals, which are typical end users for this equipment, use potent germicides such as Virex , Cidex , Sanicloth and Betadine solutions to disinfect them regularly. Increased sophistication in healthcare has resulted in introduction of a variety of portable medical devices for personalized medicine at individual households. These devices are usually disinfected by household cleaning chemicals like Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Bleach and Hydrogen Peroxide. Housings made of available commercial grades of FR PC/ABS blends have been known to crack with continued use of these chemicals. 

Iodine has anti-infective action against many bacteria, fungi, viruses, yeasts, and protozoa. Fbvidone-iodine (Betadine) is a combination of iodine and povidone, which liberates free iodine. Fbvidone-iodine is often preferred over iodine solution or tincture because it is less irritating to the skin. Unlike with the use of iodine, treated areas may be bandaged or taped.

Iodine is necessary for the proper function of the thyroid gland in humans. Dietary deficiencies can be avoided by the occasional consumption of seafood or by using iodized salt, which combines common table salt (NaCl) with potassium iodide (KI). Iodine is a useful antiseptic, either as tincture of iodine (an alcohol solution of I2), or as an aqueous solution of provi-done iodine (Betadine). see also Halogens Inorganic Chemistry.

PVP-I (Betadine preparation, Purdue Frederick Company Massengill Medicated Douche , SmithKline Beecham Persist , Becton Dickinson DuraPrep , 3M CURITY , Kendall) is an aqueous solution that comes formulated with a variety of detergents, emulsifiers, surfactants, and moisturizers, depending upon the clinical use. PVP-I can be applied via short soaks or repeated applications as free solutions. Available formulations of PVP-1 include those listed in Table 2.

PVP is a physiologically inert and biologically compatible polymer. PVP is known to reduce significantly the toxicity and irritant effects of many medications. PVP can form complexes with a variety of substances. For example, the PVP-iodine complex in the form of povidone or Betadine aqueous solution is the most widely used antiseptic in hospitals. It significantly reduces the toxicity and staining effect of the tincture of iodine solution but retains the germicidal activity of the iodine. 

Chemical compatibility/resistance is of particular importance to medical applications. Disinfectants represent one class of chemicals that includes Betadine , glutaraldehyde-based disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite solution (5 %), ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide (3 %), and ammonium chloride-based disinfectant. Additionally, resistance to methyl ethyl ketone, saline solution, lipid-based compounds, and fatty acids is important. 

Povidone-iodine (PVP-I, polyvinyl pyrrolidon-iodine complex, Betadine, Betaisodona, Braunol, Braunosan H, Disadine D.P., Disphex, Efo-Dine, Inadine, Isodine, Proviodine, Traumasept, Videne, CAS no. 25655-41-8). This is the most widely used iodophor and does not have the irritant properties associated with iodine solutions. At a strength of 7.5% in a surfactant base, povidone-iodine is applied as a surgical scrub, and at 4% is used as a shampoo or skin cleanser. Because of the small amounts of free iodine (less then 1 ppm in a 10% solution), antimicrobial effects are moderate in comparison with iodine solutions. 

A slaughterhouse worker developed allergic contact dermatitis on the hands after contact with povidone iodine used to disinfect cuts. A patch test with 10% povidone-iodine solution (Betadine) was positive, and a use test was also positive (Lachapelle 1984). 

About 33% of women with vaginal deliveries undergo an episiotomy, and it is the most common perineal incision in obstetrics and midwifery. Wound care usually involves regular antiseptic sitz baths using aqueous solutions of povidone-iodine (Betadine). However, this substance has been demonstrated to impair wound healing and to suppress the function of lymphocytes and broblasts (Cooper et al 1991). 

An important application of iodine itself is as a biocide and disinfectant. Since I2 is insoluble in water, solubihzmg agents such as poly-Af-vinyl-2-pyrrolidine (PVP) are required to prepare commercially useful aqueous iodine-containing solutions.
