Zr compounds are also useful as Lewis acids for oxidation and reduction reactions. Cp2ZrH2 or Cp2Zr(0 Pr)2 catalyze the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-type reduction and Oppenauer-type oxidation simultaneously in the presence of an allylic alcohol and benzaldehyde (Scheme 40).170 Zr(C)1 Bu)4 in the presence of excess l-(4-dimethylaminophenyl) ethanol is also an effective catalyst for the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley-type reduction.1 1 Similarly, Zr(0R)4 catalyze Oppenauer-type oxidation from benzylic alcohols to aldehydes or ketones in the presence of hydroperoxide.172,173... 

Ring-substituted benzyl alcohols sometimes undergo such reduction more effectively than unsubstituted alcohols. For example, treatment of a dichloromethane solution of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl alcohol with trifluoroacetic acid and triphenylsilane produces a 41% isolated (89% by GLC) yield of isodurene.26 Treatment of 2-me(hyl-4,6-di-/m-buty I benzyl alcohol with a three-fold excess of triethylsilane and trifluoroacetic acid in dichloromethane at room temperature gives an 85% yield of 2-mclhyl-4,6-di-/m-butyltoluene together with 15% of 3,5-di-ferf-butyltoluene. The latter is presumably formed by loss of protonated formaldehyde from the Cl ring-protonated substrate.128 Similar treatment of 2,4,6-tri-ferf-butylbenzyl alcohol produces a 90% yield of 2,4,6-tri-tert-butyltoluene within one hour (Eq. 21).128... 

Triethylsilane reduces benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol in 98% yield after 32 hours in a reaction medium containing sulfuric acid, water, and sulfolane (1 2 5) (Eq. 157). Neither benzene nor dimethylformamide is effective as an interfacing solvent for producing alcohol products under these conditions.313... 

Research has also been conducted in which steryl phosphonic acid (SPA) was examined in place of benzyl arsonic acid (BAA), which was used in an operating plant in China [5], In this study, several collectors were examined, including sodium laurate, sodium dodecyl sulphate, amino acids, diphosphonic acid (SPA). It was discovered that SPA was the most effective and that aliphatic alcohol (i.e. octanol) was required to maintain the effectiveness of SPA. The use of emulsifier in the mixture was required to provide a suitable emulsion of the composite collector. 

Blocking the C-l OH of D-fructose and L-sorbose (Scheme 25) was effected in excellent yields through regioselective isopropylidene acetalation of the free ketoses, followed by etherification (benzylation or allylation) of the remaining primary alcohol. Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of the isopropylidene groups and condensation with HSCN efficiently produced a sole fused bicyclic OZT. 

A variant that eliminates the production of water and that has proved effective for esterification of hydroxy and aromatic amino acids involves the use of thionyl chloride instead of acid. At a low temperature, the alcohol reacts with the chloride, generating methyl sulfinyl chloride, which produces the ester, probably through the mixed carboxylic acid-sulfinic acid anhydride (Figure 3.18, B). p-Toluenesulfonyl chloride added to the acid and benzyl alcohol serves the same purpose in the preparation of benzyl esters. 

Adogen has been shown to be an excellent phase-transfer catalyst for the per-carbonate oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds [1]. Generally, unsaturated alcohols are oxidized more readily than the saturated alcohols. The reaction is more effective when a catalytic amount of potassium dichromate is also added to the reaction mixture [ 1 ] comparable results have been obtained by the addition of catalytic amounts of pyridinium dichromate [2], The course of the corresponding oxidation of a-substituted benzylic alcohols is controlled by the nature of the a-substituent and the organic solvent. In addition to the expected ketones, cleavage of the a-substituent can occur with the formation of benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and benzoate esters. The cleavage products predominate when acetonitrile is used as the solvent [3]. 

Nonideal interactions can be also be characterized using small-molecule probes.7 Ideally, these probes should elute at Vu. Cation-exchange interactions can be detected by excessive retention of arginine or lysine.8 Ion-exclusion effects can be characterized by early elution of citrate or glutamic acid. Hydrophobic interactions can be detected by late elution of phenylethyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol.8... 

The reduction of benzoic acid at a lead cathode in aqueous sulphuric/citric acids yields the two-electron products benzaldehyde and the four-electron product benzyl alcohol rather than one-electron hydrodimer. In all cases studied by the authors they found that ultrasound favoured the process involving the smaller number of electrons per molecule. This is the opposite of the sonoelectrochemical effect seen in carboxylate electrooxidation [57,59,60] where the process involving the greater number of electrons was favoured by ultrasound. 

Tertiary benzylic nitriles are useful synthetic intermediates, and have been used for the preparation of amidines, lactones, primary amines, pyridines, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, and esters. The general synthetic pathway to this class of compounds relies on the displacement of an activated benzylic alcohol or benzylic halide with a cyanide source followed by double alkylation under basic conditions. For instance, 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylpropionitrile has been prepared by methylation of (2-methoxyphenyl)acetonitrile using sodium amide and iodomethane. In the course of the preparation of a drug candidate, the submitters discovered that the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of aryl fluorides with the anion of a secondary nitrile is an effective method for the preparation of these compounds. The reaction was studied using isobutyronitrile and 2-fluoroanisole. The submitters first showed that KHMDS was the superior base for the process when carried out in either THF or toluene (Table I). Typical examples are listed in Table 2.1. A few oxidations are effected by RuO but in general it is too powerful an oxidant for this purpose. The system RuCyaq. NaCl-CCy Pt anode oxidised benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and benzoic acid and p-anisaldehyde to p-anisic acid [24], and a wide range of primary alcohols and aldehydes were converted to carboxylic acids, secondary alcohols to ketones, l, -diols to lactones and keto acids from RuOj/aq. NaCl pH 4/Na(H3PO )/Pt electrodes (Tables 2.1-2.4). The system [RuO ] "/aq. K3(S303)/Adogen /CH3Cl3 oxidised benzyhc alcohols to aldehydes [30]. The oxidation catalyst TPAP (( Pr N)[RuO ]) (cf. 1.3.4) is extremely useful as an oxidant of primary alcohols to aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones without... 

Carbamates have been prepared by heating ethyl carbamate with a higherboiling alcohol in the presence or absence of catalysts [31-33], Aluminum iso-propoxide has been reported [34] to be an excellent catalyst for the interchange reaction between ethyl carbamate and benzyl alcohol. The interchange reaction is also effective for /V-alkyl carbamates as well as unsubstituted carbamates [35]. This catalyst is effective in preparing mono- and dicarbamates in excellent yields from primary and secondary alcohols and diols. Other effective catalysts are dibutyltin dilaurate [36], dibutyltin oxide [37], sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid [31], and sodium metal (reacts with alcohols to give the alkoxide catalyst) [33]. 

Besides local toxicity, discussed above, there are numerous other modes of potential adverse interactions involving excipients (19,20). Many of these pose little threat provided the amounts of excipients are constrained to certain levels. Excessive amounts, however, can cause problems, particularly for patients who are intolerant of even modest levels. Commonly used phosphate buffers may cause calcium loss with formation of insoluble calcium phosphates when such buffers are administered in over-ambitious amounts (21). Calcium phosphate precipitation has been noted particularly in nutritional parenteral admixtures for neonates because of the high nutrient requirements. Similarly, renal toxicity has been associated with depletion of zinc and other trace metals caused by large parenteral doses of ethylenediaminete-traacetic acid (EDTA) (22). Excessive absorption of glycine solutions, when used as irrigants during transurethral resections, can cause hyponatremia, hypertension, and confusion (23). The use of preservatives has been associated with cardiac effects in a few patients (24). Premature neonates were found to be at risk for receiving toxic amounts of benzoic acid or benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic solutions used to flush intravenous catheters (25).
