From P-keto acids

The majority of publications on transesterification catalyzed by solid acids have focused on the reaction of 3-keto esters. Transesterification provides an alternative route to synthesize these kinds of esters since direct preparation from P-keto acids is not a good option given that they can easily undergo decarboxylation. Table 11 provides a review of results in the literature relating to the transesterification of P-keto esters with alcohols. 

Although the selfcondensation of amide chlorides proceeds well to give amide chlorides derived from P-keto acids (56 equation 35) this reaction has only been used to synthesize P-keto acid amides, which result after hydrolysis of the condensation products (56), and not to prepare the salts (56) in the pure state. Hydrolysis permitted isolation and identification of eight amino acids N-methylglycine (sarcosine), three L-amino acids (valine, serine, lysine), two D-amino acids (cysteic acid, serine) as well as D-a//othreonine and L-2,3-diaminopropionic acid. Their configuration was determined by capillary gas chromatography on an optically active phase. No fatty acid was isolated by hydrolysis only methylketones were obtained, showing that the acyl part was derived from P-keto-acids with iso, anteiso and normal chains of length Ci4 C...
