John Ward has functionalized an indane using method D in route to tetra-petalone A (46) (Fig. 4.24).25 The o-OBoc benzyl alcohol 44 undergoes addition with two equivalents of Grignard and affords after acidic workup the phenolic indane 45 in 73% yield. Because of steric effects, only one diastereomer is observed after hydrolysis of the enol ether and thermodynamic equilibration of the... [Pg.101]

Saint-John s-wort was used in ancient Greece and medieval Europe, where it was believed to ward off evil spirits. Its name derives from wort, the Old English word for herb, and the fact that it was harvested in Europe on the eve of St. John s day (June 24th) and burned to purify the air (Fleiligenstein and Guenther 1998). Traditional uses include treatment of depression, insomnia, enuresis, and anxiety. Modern use has focused on its antidepressant effects and possible antiviral effects for treatment of the human immunodeficiency virus (FIIV) (Fleiligenstein et al. 1998) (table 7.3). There has been some interest in its antiglioma effects as well (Couldwell et al. 1993). [Pg.258]

In 1746 Dr. John Roebuck (1718-1794), of Birmingham, and Samuel Garbett substituted lead chambers, each about six feet square, for the glass globes introduced six years previously by Joshua Ward (22), an improvement which cut down the cost of producing the acid to one-fourth of its former amount (12, 13). Three years later, after the substitution of sulfuric acid for sour milk in the old process of bleaching had created a demand for the acid, Roebuck and Garbett erected a sulfuric acid plant at Prestonpans, on the east coast of Scotland (14). Since a salt industry also flourished there, Prestonpans was named for the salt pans. [Pg.186]
