Other battery types

Whereas automotive batteries have the majority of the market, other types of lead—acid batteries, such as sealed and small maintenance-free varieties, are making inroads into various appHcations. The automotive battery s operating environment has changed substantially in the last 10 years. Underhood temperature has risen and electrical loads have increased. This trend is expected to continue as car manufacturers reevaluate thek design strategies and objectives. Battery design is changing to meet these needs. [Pg.579]

There are two major types of household batteries (a) Primary batteries are those that cannot be reused. They include alkaline/manganese, carbon-zinc, mercuric oxide, zinc-air, silver oxide, and other types of button batteries, (b) Secondary batteries are those that can be reused secondary batteries (rechargeable) include lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and potentially nickel-hydrogen. [Pg.1228]

From Table 5 it can be seen that the house with the manure-belt batteries is much cheaper than the two other types. [Pg.185]

Mercury(II) oxide is found natively in the mineral montroydite. The oxide is used primarily to prepare other mercury salts. The red form of the oxide is used as a depolarizer in a certain type of dry batteries. Other applications are paints and pigments as a reagent in several wet analyses and to catalyze in organic reactions. The oxide also is used in ointments as a topical antiseptic. [Pg.576]

ZnO displays similar redox and alloying chemistry to the tin oxides on Li insertion [353]. Therefore, it may be an interesting network modifier for tin oxides. Also, ZnSnOs was proposed as a new anode material for lithium-ion batteries [354]. It was prepared as the amorphous product by pyrolysis of ZnSn(OH)6. The reversible capacity of the ZnSn03 electrode was found to be more than 0.8 Ah/g. Zhao and Cao [356] studied antimony-zinc alloy as a potential material for such batteries. Also, zinc-graphite composite was investigated [357] as a candidate for an electrode in lithium-ion batteries. Zinc parhcles were deposited mainly onto graphite surfaces. Also, zinc-polyaniline batteries were developed [358]. The authors examined the parameters that affect the life cycle of such batteries. They found that Zn passivahon is the main factor of the life cycle of zinc-polyaniline batteries. In recent times [359], zinc-poly(anihne-co-o-aminophenol) rechargeable battery was also studied. Other types of batteries based on zinc were of some interest [360]. [Pg.751]

Numerous other types of cells exist such as zinc-air, aluminum-air, sodium sulfur, and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH). Companies are on a continual quest to develop cells for better batteries for a wide range of applications. Each battery must be evaluated with respect to its intended use and such factors as size, cost, safety, shelf-life, charging characteristics, and voltage. As the twenty-first century unfolds, cells seem to be playing an ever-increasing role in society. Much of this is due to advances in the consumer electronics and the computer industry, but there have also been demands in numerous other areas. These include battery-powered tools, remote data collection, transportation (electric vehicles), and medicine. [Pg.188]

In addition to aluminum, other types of metal matrices in MMCs include magnesium, which is relatively easy to fabricate due to its low melting point, lead for batteries, titanium for aircraft turbine engines, copper for magnetohydrodynamics, and iron, nickel, or cobalt alloys. [Pg.504]

There are other types of semiconducting polymers as well, some of the more important of which are listed in Table 6.10. The condnction mechanism in most of these polymers is the polaron model described above. Applications for these polymers are growing and inclnde batteries, electromagnetic screening materials, and electronic devices. [Pg.588]

Dusts, Mists, Aerosols and Fumes. The P-5 Digital Dust Indicator is another sensor currently available for use as a component of the Chronotox System. Suitable for the measurement of silica, lead fumes, pharmaceutical powders as well as many other types of particulates found in manufacturing or laboratory situations, the battery-operated P-5 uses the light scattering technique to measure dusts over a range of either 0.01-100 mg/m or 0.001-10 mg/m (Figure 6). [Pg.529]

In undertaking our search of the literature linked to bioanalytical assessment of solid waste leachates (Tab. 2), we circumscribed it to small-scale toxicity testing performed on leachates. Furthermore, we did not exclude marine bioassays, but we exclusively selected literature references involving test battery approaches (TBAs) on solid wastes (or their elutriates). As defined previously in the first chapter of this book, a TBA represents a study conducted with two or more tests representing at least two biotic levels. As also pointed out in Section 2 of this chapter, TBAs are suitable to assess hazard at different levels so as not to underestimate ecotoxicity. Nevertheless, we have not excluded from this review publications describing other types of bioassays (e.g., terrestrial bioassays, sub-cellular bioassays or those carried out with recombinant DNA (micro)organisms and biosensors), when those were part of the TBA. [Pg.337]

Zinc has found application in several other types of battery, including industrially important zinc-air cells in which the oxygen of the air is used as the cathodic reactant in a cell such as... [Pg.5179]

Other types of dry cell batteries include the silver cell, which has a Zn anode. Its cathode uses Ag20 as the oxidizing agent in a basic environment. Mercury cells, often used in calculators, also have a Zn anode. The cathode uses HgO as the oxidizing agent in a basic medium (see Fig. 11.15). [Pg.484]

Any source of ignition should be strictly prohibited within your work area. Electrical connections need to be appropriate for working in a hydrogen environment and connectors should always be tightened where they will not move or be loose and cause a spark. Light and other types of switches should be rated for the hazard of the environment. Battery operated devices with switches such as flashlights can also be a hazard. [Pg.146]

The lead batteries had their industrial beginning with the first experiments of Plante on storage batteries in 1859 [14]. Since then many other type of storage batteries have been studied and tested, but lead-acid batteries have been the most largely developed and represent the type of battery most widely used in the past century. [Pg.146]

Electrochemical power sources are a multibillion-dollar-per-year business. Automobile starting batteries represent about 2 billion per year in the United States and over 5 billion per year worldwide. Other types of batteries and fuel cells have sales of over 1.5 billion per year in the United States and over 6 billion per year worldwide (10). In developing countries the market is growing because in many remote areas batteries provide the only electrical power. [Pg.41]

The function of the battery in a vehicle powered by an ICE is clear. In other types of vehicles, however, the function of the battery can be quite different. In the early days of motorized road transport, many vehicles were powered by electrical systems. The energy for the electric drive was provided from a storage battery, which, after... [Pg.397]
