Archival paper

Archived electronic data are to be treated no differently to archived paper data. An archivist should be assigned, access should be limited to authorized personnel, data should be archived at the completion of the study, and all material should be indexed to permit expedient retrieval. Depending on the medium used for storage, an area within the facility may be needed with specific environmental controls to maintain the integrity of electronic data. This should be specified in the data storage SOPs. Environmental conditions need to be monitored in the archives where electronic media are stored. 

The first and obvious technical access barrier is the availability of data in digital form. While most modern documents are born digital , a lot of libraries will still only archive paper copies of scientific literature, although more and more... 

The principal elements found in the Amies and the National Archives papers are plotted in Figure 2 with vertical scales selected to accommodate the maximum concentrations found for each element. Also, the Amies data are tabulated in Table VII. The measured pH values of the National Archives papers are on the top right of Figure 2. 

For the storing of textiles on new wooden shelving or drawers, a coating of a polyurethane varnish may be applied to seal the wood. Sufficient time, up to a month, should be allowed for the coating to dry. The shelves then can be lined with acid-free, buffered papers purchased from archival paper supply firms. These papers liners can be cut to fit the contour of any object and so need not to be noticeable in a display. 

Curators, collectors, and conservators need to be on constant guard against acidic tissue paper that has discolored with age. Textiles stored with highly acid tissue papers also will become discolored with time. There are acid-free and alkaline-buffered tissue papers commercially available through archival paper and supply firms. In the last several years, paper companies have become aware of the needs of historic textiles and costume departments in museums, historical societies, and universities and are placing into production acid-free rolling tubes, tissue paper, and storage boxes for costumes and accessories. 

These examples are but a small sample of Sheldon s original scientific confributions during his productive career. He published many seminal archival papers. In addition, he wrote the influential book Smoke, Dust, and Haze, which was published in 1977 by John Wiley and Sons and later published in a modified second edition in 2000 by the Oxford University Press. This book is widely used by aerosol scientists and educators around the world. 

Diethyl zinc is used in organic synthesis. It is also used in preservation of archival papers.

Findings from a CDC Report on the 1946-1948 US. Public Health Service Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Inoculation Study, Based on Review of Archived Papers of John Cutler, MD, at the University of Pittsburgh (Washington, DC, U.S. Dept, of Health and Human Services, 2010). 

Security, banknote, and archival papers are wood-free and/or ragcolor printing and can be made resistant to forgery, e. g., by means of a watermark. Basis weights range from 50 to 80 g m . ... 

Another group of effective sizes include alkyl ke-tene dimers (- fatty diketenes) and alkenylsucci-nic anhydrides. These products react with the OH-groups of the cellulose fiber. While rosin-based sizes can only by used in acid paper making processes, the cellulose-reactive sizes are used in neutral and alkaline paper making. The result is better sheet strength, reduced corrosion on the equipment, less salt in the effluent and better stability of the paper towards aging (archival paper). 

For different types of collections, this balance is differently defined. For example paper conservation treatments commonly undertaken in the museum conservation laboratory would be impractical in a Hbrary archive having a far greater collection size. The use of treatments for mass paper quantities would be unacceptable in the art museum. Documents in archives and books in Hbraries serve a different goal from art objects in a museum. Their use value Hes primarily in their information rather than in an intrinsic esthetic value. Whereas optimal preservation of that information value requires preservation of the object itself, a copy or even a completely different format could serve the same purpose. 

The principal use of CD-ROM and WORM disks is essentially substitution of data storage on paper or microfiche. Conservative estimates number the worldwide use for data storage by paper at 91%, microfiche at 4%, and in electronic media at 5%, of which 4% are magnetic and 1% optical media (18). CD-ROM is being used as an electronic counterpart to print media the WORM disk presents itself more and more as a substitute for paper to store archivable, forgery-proof documents. 

While polar monomers are usually beneficial in acrylic PSA formulations, there are times when their presence is deleterious. Examples of this may be the use of acrylic acid containing adhesives for electronic applications, for adhering to some metallic surfaces, or for application to paper used in books. Higher levels of acrylic acid not only increase the acidity of the PSA but they also increase the moisture uptake in the adhesive making dissociation of the acid easier. This can increase corrosion problems in the electronic or metal applications, or severe discoloration and degradation of paper with time. The latter is often a significant concern to librarians who deal with repair and archival restoration of books. In applications such as these, acid-free adhesives are more desirable, or at the very least the amount of acid has to be low and caution has to be taken to fully incorporate the monomer into the PSA.

Records soon grow into a mass of paper and occupy valuable floor space. To overcome this problem you may choose to microfilm the records but keep them in the same location or archive them in some remote location. In both cases you need to control the process and the conditions of storage. With paper archives you will need to maintain records of what is where, and if the archive is under the control of another group inside or outside the organization, you will need adequate controls to prevent loss of identity and inadvertent destruction. 

A key factor in determining an ROI on the basis of increased efficiencies is to be able to apply metrics to the existing processes commonly this requires measurement of the process before the implementation of a new system and then a corresponding measurement of the process after implementation. In the case of ELN systems, this information can also be supplemented through the use of the ELN database itself, for example, by looking at the number of completed experiments created per scientist per week. These data can then be compared with an historical analysis of data from paper notebook archives on scientific productivity by similar groups. 

After the data collection phase of a clinical trial is completed and its collected data are analyzed, collected data are archived centrally, usually at the coordinating center, for future reference. The data archive method depends on the data collection system. In paper-based data collection system, the physical paper forms may need to be archived for a specified period of time. Scanning... 

The 138 submitted papers were selected in the following marmer. From a total of 521 submitted two-page abstracts, 156 were identified by peer review and evaluation of the Program Committee to be expanded into 10-page (maximum) camera-ready manuscripts. Submitted manuscripts were then peer-reviewed by at least two experts in the field according to standards comparable to those used for archival journals. Diversity in country origin was also considered, and an attempt was made to minimize multiple publications for individual research groups. Consequently, the 138 papers included herein should be considered as peer-reviewed publications that represent the worldwide state-of-the-art in catalysis research.
