Multiple publication

The 138 submitted papers were selected in the following marmer. From a total of 521 submitted two-page abstracts, 156 were identified by peer review and evaluation of the Program Committee to be expanded into 10-page (maximum) camera-ready manuscripts. Submitted manuscripts were then peer-reviewed by at least two experts in the field according to standards comparable to those used for archival journals. Diversity in country origin was also considered, and an attempt was made to minimize multiple publications for individual research groups. Consequently, the 138 papers included herein should be considered as peer-reviewed publications that represent the worldwide state-of-the-art in catalysis research. 

Multiple publications (Pankow et al. 1997 Ingebrethsen et al. 2001 Pankow et al. 2003 Watson et al. 2004) have discussed measuring free-base nicotine directly, addressed the importance of free-base nicotine delivery, and examined the chemical properties of nicotine in cigarette smoke as an important determinant of the effective delivery and bioavailability of nicotine from cigarettes. Pankow et al. (1997) examined how ammonia influences nicotine delivery in tobacco smoke and concluded that conversion of nicotine to the free-base form could be facilitated by ammonia. Based on a theoretical treatment, Pankow et al. (1997) concluded that, under certain circumstances, up to 40% of the nicotine could be available as the volatile free-base form. These authors also concluded that the rate of volatilization was more rapid than that previously measured by Lewis et al. (1995) using denuder technology to examine the properties of mainstream cigarette smoke.

Multiple publications confirm that most TD patients do not complain about their symptoms and will even refuse to admit their existence when confronted with them (Alexopoulos, 1979 Breggin, 1983b, 1993 Chard et al., as cited in Myslobodsky, 1993 DeVeaugh-Geiss, 1979 Smith et al., 1979 Wojcik et al., 1980).

A major problem I have had as an editor is the problem of multiple publication, which is a cause for rejection. The reviewer has the key role in identifying papers that have been published elsewhere. 

Until 10-15 years ago it was common practice to publish a short note followed later by the full paper which superseded the earlier note. Nowadays, multiple publication of a study is still widespread, but very often the two (or more) papers eomplement eaeh other, rather than one superseding the other. In the early days of CSD construction, superseded entries were deleted from the database. Now all entries are retained. This means that a refcode family may contain two (or more) identical data sets if the author has published or deposited the same set of atomic coordinates in more than one article. Such duplicates should be eliminated in any numerical analysis project which involves the calculation of statistical measures.
