Print media

The Chemical Abstracts System (CAS) produces a set of various databases ranging from bibliographic to chemical structure and reaction databases. All the databases originate from the printed media of Chemical Abstracts, which was first published in 1907 and is divided into different topics. Author index, general index, chemical structure index, formula index, and index guide arc entries to the corresponding database (Table 5-3). 

The principal use of CD-ROM and WORM disks is essentially substitution of data storage on paper or microfiche. Conservative estimates number the worldwide use for data storage by paper at 91%, microfiche at 4%, and in electronic media at 5%, of which 4% are magnetic and 1% optical media (18). CD-ROM is being used as an electronic counterpart to print media the WORM disk presents itself more and more as a substitute for paper to store archivable, forgery-proof documents. 

Plastics can be used to make erasable printing media by a number of different techniques. Photo changing dyes could be incorporated into the structure of the plastics. The printer could change the dye to the colored form to read, and the material can be bleached with another unit that would reverse the photo coloring process. An ionic type plastic can be incorporated into the plastics and used to color the printed area by the use of an indicator type reaction with an organic acid or base. Another method would be to use a thermal printer in conjunction with liquid crystal type materials that would alter the state of the liquid crystals in the printed areas. Applying heat and electrical fields to the printed sheet would erase the printing.

In 1986 two journals devoted to chemometrics have been launched Journal of Chemometrics by Wiley, and the Journal of Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems (short ChemoLab) by Elsevier both are still the leading print media in this field.

It performs information embedding in the spatial domain and hence is sensitivity to geometric deformation such as image miss-alignment and to the presence of stains or scribbles on the printed media. 

In order to verify the robustness of the hardcopy watermarking scheme we have made few experiments where the printed watermarked images were significantly miss-aligned or where the printed media was defaced by scribbling. Even in the presence of these disturbances decoding was performed without error.

However, if a chemical plant has a small fire or a small release that slightly injures or hospitalizes two or three individuals, intense media coverage usually follows. A television reporter will often arrive just outside the front gate and broadcast with the company logo in the background. In the case of the print media, it will be a front-page story.

Jesides understanding the printer s operation, for the exam you will need to understand how the printer talks to a computer and all the items involved in that process. Also, you must understand how the different types of print media affect the print process. These two concepts will complete our discussion of printers. 

Just as it is important to use the correct printer interface and printer software, you must use the correct printer supplies. These supplies include the print media (what you print on) and the consumables (what you print with). The quality of the final print job has a great deal to do with the print supplies. 

The print media is what you put through the printer to print on. There are two major types of print media paper and transparencies. Of the two types, paper is by far the most commonly used. 

Besides print media, there are other things in the printer that run out and need to be replenished. These items are the print consumables. Most consumables are used to form the images on the print media. There are two main types of consumables in printers today ink and toner. Toner is used primarily in laser printers. Most other printers use ink.
