Color print

ColorFilm. Most color photographic images reproduced on press are made from positive color transparencies known as sHdes. Transparencies are preferred over color prints for reproduction because of superior sharpness, tonal contrast, and color saturation (see Color photography). 

Full-color printing requires pages be reprinted three or four times in registration. Receptors pass over the printhead several times at exactiy the same speed and location, but contact a differentiy colored section of donor. A fourth pure black color can improve dark picture regions, sharpen text and line art, and mask color misregistration. 

In color technology and measurement, both types of approaches are used. Color printing, for example, generally employs three colors (usually plus black), and the ever useful CIE system was founded on experiments in which colors were matched by mixtures of three primary colors, often blue, green, and red. Yet transmitted television signals are based on the opponent system, with one intensity and two color-balance signals, as are the modern representations of color, such as the CIELAB and related color spaces based on red-green and yeUow-blue opponent axes. 

The Copycolor films are peel-apart materials having chemistry similar to that of the Agfachrome-Speed process (Fig. 18). The Copycolor process provides color prints or transparencies from positive color originals. Processing in a Copyproof processor takes from 40 s to 3 min, depending on the specific materials used and the temperature. 

The Colorcopy DC film is used in a Fuji Colorcopier DC3000, which is designed to photograph reflection copy, transparencies, or soHd objects and to produce either color prints or transparencies for overhead projection. 

Although the cost per print for instant color prints is greater than for conventional film, there is significant value in the immediate availabiUty of instant prints and the fact that it is not necessary to process a whole roU when only a few images are desired. 

Instant photographs are widely used for identification purposes, for example, for drivers Hcenses, student identification cards, and credit cards that can be issued immediately. Most passport photographs generated in the United States are instant color prints. Industrial and business appHcations include photographs of record for insurance purposes, constmction documentation, and real estate photography.

Full color printing is essentially the same as for black and white but requires four steps, one each for the yellow, magenta, cyan, and black toners needed for full color reproduction.35,36 Consequently, color laser printers and color copiers are significantly more expensive than both monochrome laser printers and especially ink jet printers. Obviously, they are also slower than monochrome laser printers.
