Establishment of such curves presupposes not only random sampling of the population with which the figures are to be used but also clear definitions of the terms minimal, optimal, adequate, and good. It is suggested that, in the presence of so many variables, plus the further evidence of variation in requirements from day to day, the present development of tables of dietary requirements is a false interpretation of the whole situation. Such tables have been necessary under certain special conditions, but their wide application around the world and their indiscriminate use for purposes other than intended is undesirable.

The first task of chemoinformatics is to transform chemical knowledge, such as molecular structures and chemical reactions, into computer-legible digital information. The digital representations of chemical information are the foundation for all chemoin-formatic manipulations in computer. There are many file formats for molecular information to be imported into and exported from computer. Some formats contain more information than others. Usually, intended applications will dictate which format is more suitable. There is also a test method (ASTM E-256) for the determination of chlorine in organic compounds by sodium peroxide bomb ignition that is also worthy of reference. The method is intended for application to samples of organic materials containing more than 0.5% chlorine, and the assumption is that halogens other than chlorine will not be present. 

It obviously is impossible to provide limits and tests in each monograph for the detection of all possible unusual or unexpected impurities, the presence of which would be inconsistent with good manufacturing practice. The limits and tests provided are those considered to be necessary according to currently recognized methods of manufacture and are based on information available to or provided to the Committee on Food Chemicals Codex. If other methods of manufacture or other than the usual raw materials are used, or if other possible impurities may be present, additional tests may be required and should be applied, as necessary, by the manufacturer, vendor, or user to demonstrate that the substance is suitable for its intended application. 

Exposure of all products used in foods and food processing to foreign material contamination must be prevented. If objectionable impurities from any source, other than those covered by FCC requirements, are suspected to be present, good manufacturing practice requires the manufacturer to ensure that the substance is suitable for its intended applications as a food chemical by applying additional tests and limits. Current analytical technology should be applied wherever possible. 

The release (other than spills or other accidents) of a pesticide registered under FIFRA when used generally in accordance with its intended purpose (during routine agricultural applications according to approved product label instructions) is exempted from this reporting requirement. 

Certain pharmaceutical drugs and other substances are classified as drugs of abuse because of the tendency for people to use (or overuse) these substances for other than their intended purpose and in some cases become addicted. Because of the adverse health, sociological, and other consequences of using these substances, availability and quantity of many - but not all - of these substances are controlled by regulatory agencies. This article surveys major classes and provides specific examples of drugs of abuse, the main adverse effects, treatments available in overdose situations, and withdrawal symptoms, if applicable.

In summary, for the test item, there must be documented proof that the one item that had been intended to be tested indeed reached the sensitive parts of the test system warranting that the effects observed had really been initiated by the test item, and that the application of this item to man or the environment would therefore not be expected to result in any effects other than those which can be extrapolated from the observed ones in the test systems utilised.
