Even if alizarin had served its time as a dyestuff for textiles, natural cochineal still finds broad application as a colourant for foodstuffs. Given the high expenditure required for isolation of the natural product, a ftiUy synthetic preparation of nature-identical kermesic and carminic acids can be attractive if one takes into account that higher prices can be realised for food colourants than for textile dyes. In this connection, the first total synthesis of carminic acid has been described by John Tyman and Pietro AUevi. [62,63] 

86 herbs, roots, spices and citrus fruits, which have been macerated in distilled water, and mixed with pure ethanol. The alcohol content amounts to 25%. The bitter taste arises from quinine, and the carmine-red colour from the cochineal scale insect (Fig. 2.24). [61] 

This is a synthesis, which for sure cannot yet be scaled up to industrial quantities without further enhancement for example, the handling of pyridinium chloro-chromate and lead tetraacetate may be problematic. Also the protecting group strategy would have to be improved.

Physical Methods of Analysis The physical methods of analysis are based on measuring some specific physical property of a component of a sample that serves to ascertain its nature and/or its the relative amount in the sample. Such methods, most of which have been made possible only by modern developments in physics and electronics, make up the main source of analytical information on all substances at the present time (see Table 9 and Textbox 10) (Settle 1997). 

The advent of synthetic polymers was of special significance since the water soluble inorganic salts defined up to that time were of little or no utility in these largely hydrophobic materials. Modern developments therefore were concentrated on the development of polymer compatible permanent fire retardants. Although a multitude of individual products have since been developed, Table II attempts to list the most significant developments with the largest impact on the direction of fire retardant chemistry. 

This chapter provides an overview of the technology, the products that can be made using this technology, important terminology, and a general overview of the history and modern development trends. 

In this somewhat distinctive volume it is possible to trace Peter s thought processes over the years as well as the development of cationoid polymerisations. A relation between rupture phenomena and (specific) surface energy 7 was postulated by Dupre 4 almost simultaneously with the hypothesis of Quincke. Let a cylindrical rod be broken in tension. After rupture, two new gas — solid interfaces of vr2 each are present, r being the radius of the rupture surface. Consequently, the work of rupture ought to contain a term 2 nr2 7 . Dupre did not indicate how to separate this term from the main component of the work of rupture, which is the work required to extend the rod to its maximum elongation (or strain). The modern development of Dupre s ideas is reviewed in Section III.3. below.

Smith (47) and Bjornbom (48) have discussed the introduction of restrictions into equilibrium calculations in addition to the elemental abundance constraints. Often only a restricted set of terminal species is chosen, but it would seem logical in choosing such additional restrictions to revert to Gibbs original idea of specifying possible reactions as well as possible species. The choice of elementary reactions, rather than of overall reactions with complicated stoichiometry, would be simplified by modern developments in theoretical chemistry and surface science. 

The main objective of the present section, however, is to begin with a very standard technique such as optical microscopy and to use it to illustrate why colloids are difficult to see and what modern developments have emerged in recent years to allow us to see and do things that were considered impossible until a decade ago. We also use this opportunity to review briefly some new techniques that are currently available to measure interaction forces between particles directly. We appeal to some of these techniques in other chapters when we discuss colloidal forces.
