Anti-tumor effect

Combining anti-VEGF treatment with chemotherapy or radiation therapy results in a greater anti-tumor effect than either of these therapies alone. 

Tocotrienols are another group of phytochemicals of rice bran which have a chemopreventive effect and have been demonstrated to inhibit breast cancer (Nesaremam et al., 1998). The polysaccharides of rice bran contain a-glucan, the anti-tumor effect of which has been demonstrated by its inhibition of gastrointestinal carcinogenesis (Akeshita et al., 1992). Rice bran agglutinin has been shown to induce apoptosis of cancer cells by the mechanism of cell cycle dysregulation (Miyoshi et al., 2001). 

Much toxicological data are available on this red pigment acute oral toxicity in mice, 90-day subchronic toxicological study, acute dermal irritation and corrosion, acute eye irritation and corrosion, anti-tumor effectiveness, micronucleus test in mice, AMES test Salmonella typhimurium reverse mutation assay), estimation of antibiotic activity, and results of estimation of five mycotoxins. A new patent on Arpink Red was filed in 2001 with claims of anti-cancer effects of the anthraquinone derivatives and apphcations in the food and pharmaceutical fields.

As well as NONOates, other NO donors also showed anticancer activity independently. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a metal-NO complex, showed cytotoxic effects on the cells of some patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) or chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL), but not with multiple myeloma [109]. SNP and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) did not share the drug resistance. Interestingly, SNP had no effect on lymphocytes of healthy volunteers. These results suggest that SNP has an anti-tumor effect on human hematological malignant cells.

IFNp has been used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. IFNp has been also used in combination with IFNy because of synergistic anti-tumor effects. The combinations of IFN appear to potentiate systemic effects and cumulative toxicity compared to administrahon of either interferon alone. Synergistic toxicity limits the tolerated dose maximum and may also limit efficacy. Low doses of IFN-p and -y given in combination, either by intravenous bolus or continuous infusion, do not appear to cause renal damage or dysfunction [62, 63].
