Dover Chemical Corp. is a subsidiary of ICC Industries Inc. headquartered in New York City. Dover s products are extremely diverse the chemicals made include brominated and bromo-chlorinated flame retardants, benzophenone and hindered amine light stabilisers, phosphite stabilisers, surfactants, lubricants, metallic stearates, and alkyl phenols. It is also a leading manufacturer of chlorinated hydrocarbon waxes, and there are several chemical products unrelated to plastics. [Pg.171]

The second level of aid, on-site intervention, necessitates an application from the public authorities for the requisitioning of both personnel and material means from the voluntary firms. A total of 173 firms are members of the TRANSAID Convention. Moreover, specialized aid agreements have already been signed by the Interior Minister and the professional unions of manufacturers of the following chemicals chlorine, cyanhydric acid, ethylene, alkyl lead compounds, and liquefied gases. [Pg.57]

To overcome the problems of gas-sensor failure due to poisoning of the elements, several manufacturers have used specific filter devices in front of the elements. For example, filters to remove alkyl lead compounds from petrol vapour have included paradichlorobenzene and fibrous silica (3). However, the most commonly used material is based on active charcoal. Such filters (4) effectively absorb many common poisons and inhibitors including silicones, alkyl lead compounds and halogen-containing species. However, along with the absorption of potentially harmful vapours, carbon filters will also absorb hydrocarbons. This effect in practice limits the use of such filters to detectors for C3 and lower hydrocarbons. They cannot be employed in general flammable gas detectors. [Pg.262]

Workers involved in the manufacture of tetraethyl- and tetramethyl-lead are exposed to both inorganic and alkyl lead. The major potential hazard, absorption through the skin, is reduced by the use of protective clothing [77]. [Pg.19]

The potential advantages of LPG concern essentially the environmental aspects. LPG s are simple mixtures of 3- and 4-carbon-atom hydrocarbons with few contaminants (very low sulfur content). LPG s contain no noxious additives such as lead and their exhaust emissions have little or no toxicity because aromatics are absent. This type of fuel also benefits often enough from a lower taxation. In spite of that, the use of LPG motor fuel remains static in France, if not on a slightly downward trend. There are several reasons for this situation little interest from automobile manufacturers, reluctance on the part of automobile customers, competition in the refining industry for other uses of and fractions, (alkylation, etherification, direct addition into the gasoline pool). However, in 1993 this subject seems to have received more interest (Hublin et al., 1993). [Pg.230]

Alkyltin Intermedia.tes, For the most part, organotin stabilizers are produced commercially from the respective alkyl tin chloride intermediates. There are several processes used to manufacture these intermediates. The desired ratio of monoalkyl tin trichloride to dialkyltin dichloride is generally achieved by a redistribution reaction involving a second-step reaction with stannic chloride (tin(IV) chloride). By far, the most easily synthesized alkyltin chloride intermediates are the methyltin chlorides because methyl chloride reacts directiy with tin metal in the presence of a catalyst to form dimethyl tin dichloride cleanly in high yields (21). Coaddition of stannic chloride to the reactor leads directiy to almost any desired mixture of mono- and dimethyl tin chloride intermediates ... [Pg.547]

Garbodiimide Formation. Carbodiimide formation has commercial significance in the manufacture of Hquid MDI. Heating of MDI in the presence of catalytic amounts of phosphine oxides or alkyl phosphates leads to partial conversion of isocyanate into carbodiimide (95). The carbodiimide (39) species reacts with excess isocyanate to form a 2 + 2cycloaddition product. The presence of this product in MDI leads to a melting point depression and thus a mixture which is Hquid at room temperature. [Pg.456]

By-Products. Almost all commercial manufacture of pyridine compounds involves the concomitant manufacture of various side products. Liquid- and vapor-phase synthesis of pyridines from ammonia and aldehydes or ketones produces pyridine or an alkylated pyridine as a primary product, as well as isomeric aLkylpyridines and higher substituted aLkylpyridines, along with their isomers. Furthermore, self-condensation of aldehydes and ketones can produce substituted ben2enes. Condensation of ammonia with the aldehydes can produce certain alkyl or unsaturated nitrile side products. Lasdy, self-condensation of the aldehydes and ketones, perhaps with reduction, can lead to alkanes and alkenes. [Pg.333]

Major uses of ethyl chloride are the manufacture of tetraethyl lead and the synthesis of insecticides. It is also used as an alkylating agent and as a solvent for fats and wax. [Pg.171]

The manufacture of fertilizers was discussed in Chapter 14. Phosphate rock is digested with sulfuric acid to convert CaC03 into a more soluble form that contains a higher percentage of phosphorus. Sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst in alkylation reactions, petroleum refining, manufacture of detergents, paints, dyes, and fibers, and other processes. It is also used as the electrolyte in the lead-acid battery that is used in automobiles. Sulfuric acid is an enormously important chemical commodity that it would be hard to do without. [Pg.545]

Another study on the electrosynthesis of (alkyl) M compounds (M = Ge, Pb, Sn n = 2, 4) provides illustrative examples37. Sacrificial cathodes of Cd, Zn and Mg were used to produce the corresponding metal alkyls which are subsequently oxidized on sacrificial anodes of Ge, Sn and Pb. The cells are of very simple construction, with the proper metal electrodes. Diethylcadmium is utilized in this way for the manufacture of tetraethyllead from lead acetate and triethylaluminum in the following reaction sequence ... [Pg.671]

Major sources of lead in Atlantic coast streams included wastes from metal-finishing industries, brass manufacturing, lead alkyl production, primary and secondary lead smelting, coal combustion, and manufacture of lead oxide. [Pg.251]

The middle phase is much more viscous than the neat phase, though the concentration of the latter is higher. If a concentrated system of an alkyl ether sulfate and water existing initially as a neat phase is stepwise diluted, the range of the middle phase will be reached. This is accompanied by a steep increase in viscosity. The formation of the neat phase allows the manufacture and handling of highly concentrated fluid preparations. This property, however, can lead to processing problems upon dilution. [Pg.17]

As of this date, there is no lithium or alkyl-lithium catalyzed polyisoprene manufactured by the leading synthetic rubber producers- in the industrial nations. However, there are several rubber producers who manufacture alkyl-lithium catalyzed synthetic polybutadiene and commercialize it under trade names like "Diene Rubber"(Firestone) "Soleprene"(Phillips Petroleum), "Tufdene"(Ashai KASA Japan). In the early stage of development of alkyl-lithium catalyzed poly-butadiene it was felt that a narrow molecular distribution was needed to give it the excellent wear properties of polybutadiene. However, it was found later that its narrow molecular distribution, coupled with the purity of the rubber, made it the choice rubber to be used in the reinforcement of plastics, such as high impact polystyrene. Till the present time, polybutadiene made by alkyl-lithium catalyst is, for many chemical and technological reasons, still the undisputed rubber in the reinforced plastics applications industries. [Pg.411]

In the petroleum industry, the sulfuric acid and hydrogen fluoride employed as alkylation catalysts must be substantially anhydrous to be effective, and steel equipment is satisfactory. Where conditions are not anhydrous, lead-lined, monel-lined, or enamel-lined equipment is satisfactory. In a few cases, copper or tinned copper is still used, for example, in the manufacture of pharmaceutical and photographic products to lessen contamination with metals. [Pg.592]
