Water-soluble adhesive

Azelaic acid (AA), 1,9-nonanedioic acid or heptane-1,7-dicarboxylic acid, is used in manifold application areas. AA is offered in the pharmaceutical field for the treatment of acne and rosacea due to its antibacterial effect [1,2]. However, AA is much more widely applied as a monomer for the production of polymers such as alkyd resins, polyamides, and impact-proof polyesters or for the synthesis of plasticizers, lubricants, lithium complex greases, corrosion inhibitors, dielectric fluids, heat-transfer fluids, metal to glass fluxes, emulsion breakers, waxes, tobacco sheet plasticizers, hot-melt coatings and adhesives, water-soluble coating resins, hydraulic fluids, fungicides, insecticides, and so on [3-7]. [Pg.331]

Acryhc modifiers for cement impact strength and adhesion to substrates are discussed in reference 211. Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. For some applications, such as for repulpable type PSAs, it may be advantageous to incorporate high levels of acrylic acid because this makes the polymer more hydrophilic. At the same time, high levels of acid also improve the water-dispersibility of the adhesive, especially at higher pH where the acid groups are converted to the more water-soluble neutralized salt form. Since the high level of acid increases the of the resulting polymer, a non-tacky material results. A WBL can also be formed within the silicone phase but near the surface and caused by insufficiently crosslinked adhesive. This may result from an interference of the cure chemistry by species on the surface of substrate. An example where incompatibility between the substrate and the cure system can exist is the moisture cure condensation system. Acetic acid is released during the cure, and for substrates like concrete, the acid may form water-soluble salts at the interface. These salts create a weak boundary layer that will induce failure on exposure to rain. The CDT of polyolefins illustrates the direct effect of surface pretreatment and subsequent formation of a WBL by degradation of the polymer surface [72,73]. [Pg.698]

Water-soluble polymers eomprise a major elass of polymerie materials and are used in a wide variety of applieations. Synthetie water-soluble polymers inelude poly(vinyl aleohol), poly(aerylamide), poly(aerylie aeid), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), eellulosies, and many eopolymers of these types. Their end uses are quite varied and their applieations depend mainly on their viseosify-ing, rheologieal, and surfaee-aetive properties (1). For example, poly (vinyl aleohol) is used in adhesives, fibers, textile and paper sizing, paekaging, as a stabilizer for emulsion polymerization, and as a preeursor for the manufaeture of poly(vinyl butyral), whieh is used in automotive windshields. Poly(vinyl aleohol) is also the world s largest volume, eommodity, water-soluble polymer. [Pg.559]

The end-use applieations of water-soluble polymers require aeeurate means to eharaeterize the moleeular weight distribution (MWD) and to provide a better understanding of produet performanee. The moleeular weight affeets many physieal properties sueh as solution viseosity, tensile strength, bloek resistanee, water and solvent resistanee, adhesive strength, and dispersing power. Organic peroxide-aromatic tertiary amine system is a well-known organic redox system 1]. The typical examples are benzoyl peroxide(BPO)-N,N-dimethylani-line(DMA) and BPO-DMT(N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine) systems. The binary initiation system has been used in vinyl polymerization in dental acrylic resins and composite resins [2] and in bone cement [3]. Many papers have reported the initiation reaction of these systems for several decades, but the initiation mechanism is still not unified and in controversy [4,5]. Another kind of organic redox system consists of organic hydroperoxide and an aromatic tertiary amine system such as cumene hydroperoxide(CHP)-DMT is used in anaerobic adhesives [6]. Much less attention has been paid to this redox system and its initiation mechanism. A water-soluble peroxide such as persulfate and amine systems have been used in industrial aqueous solution and emulsion polymerization [7-10], yet the initiation mechanism has not been proposed in detail until recently [5]. In order to clarify the structural effect of peroxides and amines including functional monomers containing an amino group, a polymerizable amine, on the redox-initiated polymerization of vinyl monomers and its initiation mechanism, a series of studies have been carried out in our laboratory. [Pg.227]

Cellulose is also commercially modified by acetylation to produce a material suitable for X-ray and cine film. Commercially cellulose ethers are also prepared, such as methylcellulose. This material is water-soluble and gives a highly viscous solution at very low concentrations. Hence it is widely used as a thickener in latex paints and adhesives, in cosmetics and for coating pharmaceutical tablets. [Pg.19]

Another major drawback of polysaccharides is their hydrophilic nature leading to low degrees of adhesion between fiber and matrix [11]. Moisture absorption takes place by three types of mechanisms namely diffusion, capillarity, and transport via micro cracks [2]. Among the three, diffusion is considered to be the major mechanism. Water absorption largely depends on the water-soluble or hygroscopic components embedded in the matrix, which acts as a semipermeable membrane. While, fiber/matrix adhesion and fiber architecture also affect the moisture absorption. The results of the water sorption experiment showed an interesting trend. The extent of water uptake was not very significant and also did not increase linearly with amount of filler (Table-2). [Pg.122]
