Plasticizers solubility

Further analysis of the above results may be obtained by studying the solubility parameters of the polymers and plasticizers. Solubility parameters provide a measure of the extent of Interaction possible between chemical species. To determine the solubility parameters, the structure of the smallest repeat unit was considered and the contribution of each atomic group to the total energy of vaporization and molar volume was summed over the molecular structure. The ratio Is calculated as the cohesive energy. The calculated solubility parameters of the polymers and plasticizers are shown In Table II. [Pg.268]

For plastics soluble in solvents such as Plexiglas, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, special solvent-based adhesives are available (Section 9.2.5). [Pg.50]

The polymer which is obtained when chloroprene is emulsion-polymerized in the absence of sulfur or a chain-transfer agent is a tough, insoluble non-plastic material. If sulfur is dissolved in the chloroprene prior to polymerization (at a level of 0.5-1.5 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of monomer), the product is still a tough insoluble material which is unsuitable for use as an elastomer. However, by heating the latex obtained (still in an alkaline condition) with a thiophilic reagent, such as tetraethylthiuram disulphide (Vlll), the polymer becomes plasticized or peptized to a soft, plastic, soluble polychloroprene which is suitable for use as an elastomer. [Pg.694]

In fact, to determine plasticizer solubility in polymers with the aforesaid technique it is sufficient to have one sample provided two- or three-fold melting of the crystallized part of the plasticizer is performed. However, for the reliability of the result to be increased this experiment can be carried out with several individually prepared samples containing different plasticizer surpluses. [Pg.77]

However, adhesive bonding must be used in bonding to metals, wood, rubber, and most other plastics. Like nylon, PC is hygroscopic. This is the reason that keeping the humidity low before bonding is important. [Pg.114]
