It is possible to expect that the endurance at the fixed loading allows to exclude the component AEl, because the development of prevailing defect is continuing, and numerous initiation of stable micro-cracks outside the zone are excepted. [Pg.84]

Fig. 4 X-ray refraction topography of a polystyrene sample with highly oriented micro cracks induced by strain in vertical direction. Fig. 4 X-ray refraction topography of a polystyrene sample with highly oriented micro cracks induced by strain in vertical direction.
The refractograp of figure 4 shows highly oriented micro cracks of a polystyrene sample. The orientation of the cracks is perpendicular to the mechanical strain direction. The X-ray refracted intensitiy can be interpreted as crack density, i.e. the inner surfaces within a unit volume. Changing the tilt angle (of polystyrene and polystyrene blend samples) with respect to the primary beam leads to significantly different distributions of crack orientation (Fig. 5). [Pg.560]

Iridium Oxide. Iridium dioxide [12030 9-8] coatings, typically used in combination with valve metal oxides, are quite similar in stmcture to those of mthenium dioxide coatings. X-ray diffraction shows the mtile crystal stmcture of the iridium dioxide scanning electron micrographs show the micro-cracked surface typical of these thermally prepared oxide coatings. [Pg.121]

The case is different again under micro-discontinuous (i.e. micro-cracked or micro-porous) chromium, on which a definite improvement in corrosion resistance can be achieved when copper is present under the nickel coating . [Pg.520]

Supplemental films The Batelle Memorial Institute has developed a post-treatment for nickel plus chromium coatings in which the plated part is made cathodic in a solution containing dichromate. A film thereby formed on the surface seals pores in the coating through which corrosion of the nickel might otherwise occur. Later work suggests, however, that micro-cracked chromium gives superior results. [Pg.530]

Another major drawback of polysaccharides is their hydrophilic nature leading to low degrees of adhesion between fiber and matrix [11]. Moisture absorption takes place by three types of mechanisms namely diffusion, capillarity, and transport via micro cracks [2]. Among the three, diffusion is considered to be the major mechanism. Water absorption largely depends on the water-soluble or hygroscopic components embedded in the matrix, which acts as a semipermeable membrane. While, fiber/matrix adhesion and fiber architecture also affect the moisture absorption. The results of the water sorption experiment showed an interesting trend. The extent of water uptake was not very significant and also did not increase linearly with amount of filler (Table-2). [Pg.122]

Although it is relatively easy to understand why some of the macroscopic properties of liquids, especially their shape, can depend on surface properties, it is not so obvious for solids. However, the strength of a solid is determined by the ease with which micro-cracks propagate, when placed under stress, and this depends on its surface energy, that is the amount of (surface) work required to continue the crack and hence expose new surface. This has the direct effect that materials are stronger in a vacuum, where their surface energy is not reduced by the adsorption of either gases or liquids, typically available under atmospheric conditions. [Pg.9]

Pater also prepared a semi-2-IPN, LaRC-RP41, from a mixture having the ratio of 80 20 of thermosetting PMR-15 to LaRC-TPI polyamic acid(44). LaRC-RP41 exhibited significantly improved toughness and micro-cracking resistance, but showed somewhat poorer mechanical properties at 316 °C, compared to those of PMR 15 near resin (see Fig. 13). [Pg.316]

However, the actual measured OCV will often fall slightly below /2rcv by Ui which represents losses in potential due to residual electronic conduction in the electrolyte and possibly also cross over of gases via micro cracks and fissures in the electrolyte. [Pg.5]

At elevated temperature a joint action of thermo-chemical concrete degradation, V, accounting for high temperature related micro-cracking and dehydration, and external load-related cracking, d, is described by the total damage parameter, D, given by [7],... [Pg.94]

Micro-crack induced by non-uniform distribution of carbon fibres and thermal mismatch between Cf and sialon in the Cf/a-sialon composite (reprinted from J. Eur. Ceram. Soc., 22(2), Yu Z B, Thompson D P and Bhatti A R, Synergistic roles of carbon fibres and Zr02 particles in strengthening and toughening Li-a-sialon composites, 225-235 (2002). Mechanical stress High web tension causes micro-cracks within the metal layer. Reduction of the barrier in thicker layers is mentioned in the literature, but is probably a result of the stress to which the metal layer is exposed in subsequent process steps (e.g. lamination). [Pg.196]

Analysis of the polished surface and residue left in the polishing tank showed conclusively that no dealloying of the surface took place and AFM analysis of pre-and post-polished samples showed that the polishing process was effective at preventing corrosion because it removed the micro-cracks from the steel surface [22],... [Pg.294]
