Membrane, semipermeable

The semipermeable membrane in osmometry is a valve for the flow of certain kind of matter. It must be sufficiently stiff to withstand external forces resulting from a pressure difference on both sides. [Pg.81]

Membrane separator. A separator that passes gas or vapor to the mass spectrometer through a semipermeable (e.g., silicon) membrane that selectively transmits organic compounds in preference to carrier gas. Membrane separator, membrane enricher, semipermeable membrane separator, and semipermeable membrane enricher are synonymous terms. [Pg.432]

Adsorption systems employing molecular sieves are available for feed gases having low acid gas concentrations. Another option is based on the use of polymeric, semipermeable membranes which rely on the higher solubiHties and diffusion rates of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide in the polymeric material relative to methane for membrane selectivity and separation of the various constituents. Membrane units have been designed that are effective at small and medium flow rates for the bulk removal of carbon dioxide. [Pg.172]

For example, the measurements of solution osmotic pressure made with membranes by Traube and Pfeffer were used by van t Hoff in 1887 to develop his limit law, which explains the behavior of ideal dilute solutions. This work led direcdy to the van t Hoff equation. At about the same time, the concept of a perfectly selective semipermeable membrane was used by MaxweU and others in developing the kinetic theory of gases. [Pg.60]

Membrane Sep r tion. The separation of components ofhquid milk products can be accompHshed with semipermeable membranes by either ultrafiltration (qv) or hyperfiltration, also called reverse osmosis (qv) (30). With ultrafiltration (UF) the membrane selectively prevents the passage of large molecules such as protein. In reverse osmosis (RO) different small, low molecular weight molecules are separated. Both procedures require that pressure be maintained and that the energy needed is a cost item. The materials from which the membranes are made are similar for both processes and include cellulose acetate, poly(vinyl chloride), poly(vinyHdene diduoride), nylon, and polyamide (see AFembrane technology). Membranes are commonly used for the concentration of whey and milk for cheesemaking (31). For example, membranes with 100 and 200 p.m are used to obtain a 4 1 reduction of skimmed milk. [Pg.368]

A variety of methods have been devised to stabilize shales. The most successful method uses an oil or synthetic mud that avoids direct contact between the shale and the emulsified water. However, preventing direct contact does not prevent water uptake by the shale, because the organic phase forms a semipermeable membrane on the surface of the wellbore between the emulsified water in the mud and the water in the shale. Depending on the activity of the water, it can be drawn into the shale (activity lower in the shale) or into the mud (activity higher in the shale) (95—97). This osmotic effect is favorable when water is drawn out of the shale thus the aqueous phase of the oil or synthetic mud is maintained at a low water activity by a dding a salt, either sodium chloride or more commonly, calcium chloride. The salt concentration is carried somewhat above the concentration required to balance the water activity in the shale to ensure water movement into the mud. [Pg.182]

Osmotic Pressure Controlled Oral Tablets. Alza Corp. has developed a system that is dependent on osmotic pressure developed within a tablet. The core of the tablet is the water-soluble dmg encapsulated in a hydrophobic, semipermeable membrane. Water enters the tablet through the membrane and dissolves the dmg creating a greater osmotic pressure within the tablet. The dmg solution exits at a zero-order rate through a laser drilled hole in the membrane. Should the dmg itself be unable to provide sufficient osmotic pressure to create the necessary pressure gradient, other water-soluble salts or a layer of polymer can be added to the dmg layer. The polymer swells and pushes the dmg solution through the orifice in what is known as a push-pull system (Fig. 3). The exhausted dmg unit then passes out of the body in fecal matter. [Pg.231]

Reverse Osmosis. Osmosis is the flow of solvent through a semipermeable membrane, from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution. This flow results from the driving force created by the difference in pressure between the two solutions. Osmotic pressure is the pressure that must be added to the concentrated solution side to stop the solvent flow through the membrane. Reverse osmosis is the process of reversing the flow, forcing water through a membrane from a concentrated solution to a dilute solution to produce pure water. Figure 2 illustrates the processes of osmosis and reverse osmosis. [Pg.261]

Silver [7440-22-4] Ag, as an active material in electrodes was first used by Volta, but the first intensive study using silver as a storage battery electrode was reported in 1889 (5) using silver oxide—iron and silver oxide—copper combinations. Work on silver oxide—cadmium followed. In the 1940s, the use of a semipermeable membrane combined with limited electrolyte was introduced by Andrir in the silver oxide—2inc storage battery. [Pg.544]

Silver—Zinc Separators. The basic separator material is a regenerated cellulose (unplastici2ed cellophane) which acts as a semipermeable membrane aHowiag ionic conduction through the separator and preventing the migration of active materials from one electrode to the other. [Pg.555]

The enzyme can be immobilized on the electrode by several techniques (53). The simplest method, first used in 1962, is to trap an enzyme solution between the electrode surface and a semipermeable membrane. Another technique is to immobilize the enzyme in a polymer gel such as polyacrylamide which is coated on the electrode surface. Very thin-membrane films can be obtained by electropolymerization techniques (49,54,55) using polypyrrole, polyindole, or polyphenylenediamine films, among others. These thin films (qv) offer the advantage of improved diffusion of substrate and product that... [Pg.102]

Preparation of aqueous HOCl substantially free of CU from either aqueous CI2 or HOCl—salt solutions has been accompHshed by electro dialysis (qv) using semipermeable membranes (130). This method has limited potential because of the unavailabihty of stable anionic membranes. [Pg.468]

Electrodecantation or electroconvec tion is one of several operations in which one mobile component (or several) is to be separated out from less mobile or immobile ones. The mixture is introduced between two vertical semipermeable membranes for separating cations, anion membranes are used, and vice versa. When an electric field is apphed, the charged component migrates to one or another of the membranes but since it cannot penetrate the membrane, it accumulates at the surface to form a dense concentrated layer of particles which will sink toward the bottom of the apparatus. Near the top of the apparatus immobile components will be relatively pure. Murphy [J. Electrochem. Soc., 97(11), 405 (1950)] has used silver-silver chloride electrodes in place of membranes. Frilette [J. Phys. Chem., 61, 168 (1957)], using anion membranes, partially separated and Na, ... [Pg.2007]

Filtration Cross-flow filtration (microfiltration includes cross-flow filtration as one mode of operation in Membrane Separation Processes which appears earlier in this section) relies on the retention of particles by a membrane. The driving force for separation is pressure across a semipermeable membrane, while a tangential flow of the feed stream parallel to the membrane surface inhibits solids settling on and within the membrane matrix (Datar and Rosen, loc. cit.). [Pg.2058]
