This conclusion stands in contrast to the statements made in an earlier review (Kauffmann and Hallahan, 1979) that behavioral therapeutic techniques have an important role to play in ADHD, and partly contradicts the results of some more recent studies. As summarized in Chapter 7 (p. 250 f.), the US MTA study did not detect any significant difference between combined treatments and treatment with methylphenidate alone with regard to their effects on ADHD symptoms however combined treatments had some advantage over drug alone on features such as anxiety disorders, social skills, consumer (mainly parent) satisfaction and possibly academic achievement (Pelham et al., 2000). Additional statistical analysis of the MTA study by responders and in terms of composite outcome measures also revealed additional benefit of combined treatments over drug therapy alone (Jensen et al., 2001). [Pg.297]

To determine how best to present green chemistry to students, it would be best to look at attitudes. A study reports on the relationship between attitudinal factors and student academic success in first-year chemistry courses. The study includes a comparison of attitudes toward chemistry of first-year medical students at two universities. Students from these two institutions differ considerably with respect to educational backgrounds. In the investigation, attitudes toward science (particularly chemistry) were correlated not only with students academic achievement, but also with personal demographic data, such as matriculation results, parents educational level, and location of high school. The students responses to an opinion survey suggest a substantial relationship between attitudes and academic achievement. The results also suggest that academic achievement in chemistry is more dependent on attitudes toward science than aptitudes of students (Cukrowska et al., 1999). [Pg.135]

According to Alcoholism Addiction Magazine, researchers have put together a user profile of inhalant abusers. Almost all of the profile indicators relate to social and economic conditions. The profile of a typical inhalant abuser is poor academic achievement in junior high or middle school, no father living at home, poor coping skills, insecurity and low self-esteem, low I.Q., depression, an alcoholic living in the home, family problems, and low family income. [Pg.45]

If students are accepted with low GRE scores, as is often the case for minority students without a tradition of academic achievement, they lower the average, and the fear is that site-visiting committees mark that against you. On the other hand, if recruitment of minority students is not considered adequate by the site-visiting committee, this is also a mark against the program. [Pg.14]

What is diversity Within this workshop, we have been primarily defining diversity in terms of race and ethnicity. There is also diversity in gender as well as diversity in career paths. Diversity in the chemical workforce should not be framed solely within a discussion of academic achievement as the one and only possible route for a success story. Success stories are also to be found in industry. We should therefore think about the need for diversity in many different directions. We should think about it in a holistic kind of way, if you will pardon a new-age term. It is all related. So, do not try to solve just one diversity problem within a particular setting. Instead think about how solving that problem might fit in within the context of all the other problems. [Pg.48]

Dr. W tests for intelligence, visual motor skills, academic achievement, and emotional issues. Based on the test results and Michael s history, Dr. W and Dr. K tell Mr. and Mrs. S that Michael has attention deficit disorder (ADHD)—inattentive type. They are surprised to hear this finding since Michael has never been hyper. Dr. K and Dr. W schedule a joint appointment with Mr. and Mrs. S to go over their questions and concerns. [Pg.189]

Early on, Francis Galton, the father of differential psychology, held that a general dimension was central to many academic achievements as well as subsequent developmental trajectories throughout life but especially in the world of work. He also appears to have believed that psychological assessment should focus on attributes that operate widely. In Gabon s (1869/1961) words ... [Pg.8]

Detterman There have been studies in Warsaw, Poland, which was destroyed after World War II and reconstituted under a Communist regime. People were more-or-less randomly assigned to neighbourhoods. They looked at academic achievement in relation to IQ, and found the same relationship as was found in democratic societies (Firkowska et al 1978). [Pg.35]

Sternberg and colleagues assessed analytic, creative, and practical academic achievements. The measures of academic achievements were positively correlated with each other (average r=0.72, disattenuated average r=0.84). They found that different facets of ability measured by STAT were not differentially predictive of academic achievements. They also found that analytic ability correlated with an overall index of performance 0.42 (disattenuated r=0.56) indicating that analytic ability is related to academic achievement even when that achievement is defined in terms of the expanded repertoire postulated by Sternberg s triarchic theory. [Pg.124]

Houle The problem with this argument is that it may be that y is responsible for academic achievement, so you re not really measuring two different things, as you might potentially be with verbal or mathematical or spatial abilities. [Pg.159]

Academic achievement came natural to Ted Bourne, and he must have received a Form Prize every year he was at school. His particular interest in chemistry was fostered by his chemistry master, Tom W. Kirkwood, better known as Twink, who was a much-loved character. The stimulus on a schoolboy in a place like Cannock to turn to the physical sciences, especially chemistry, probably came not so much from the proximity of coal-mining and iron-founding as from the ceramics of the Potteries and the chemical and heavy engineering industries of the Black Country. Although he was successful in all subjects except art, Bourne was as unassuming, and consequently as popular, then as he was to be when he had risen to an influential position later in life. [Pg.5]
