Neurological function

Immediately report the occurrence of the following adverse reactions severe vomiting, dehydration, changes in neurologic functioning, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. 

Compounds containing mercury, particularly its organic compounds, are acutely poisonous. Mercury vapor is an insidious poison because its effect is cumulative. Frequent exposure to low levels of mercury vapor can allow mercury to accumulate in the body. The effects include impaired neurological function, hearing loss, and other ailments.

Episodes of acute worsening of neurologic function (relapses) followed by a varying degree of recovery, with a stable course between attacks (remissions)... 

Idiopathic epilepsies These syndromes are thought to be due to genetic alterations, but the underlying etiology is not identified. Neurologic functions are completely normal apart from the occurrence of seizures. 

Cryptogenic epilepsies In these epilepsies the seizures are the result of an underlying neurologic disorder that is often ill-defined or undocumented. Neurologic functions are often abnormal or developmentally delayed in patients with cryptogenic epilepsies. 

The patient is found responsive but in acute distress. He is lying on the examination table with knees drawn up to his chest. There is involuntary abdominal guarding with a rigid abdomen. There are no audible bowel sounds. He is alert and oriented x 3. Neurologic function is intact. Mucous membranes are dry. Stool is heme-negative.

The intermediate-duration effects of hydrogen sulfide on neurological function were examined by the measurement of motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities of the tail nerve or morphology of the sciatic nerve (Gagnaire et al. 1986). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 0 or 50 ppm hydrogen sulfide for 5 days a week, for 25 weeks. The study authors did not report the duration of exposure to hydrogen sulfide per day. No neurotoxic effects were observed in the rats. 

Treatment. Since the 1950s, the treatment of Wilson s disease has relied on chelating agents [25]. Early attempts to use BAL or EDTA for this purpose were unsuccessful, but penicillamine, triethylene tetramine dihydrochloride (trientine), and tetrathiomolybdate, all in combination with a low-copper diet, have proved to be effective, and result in the urinary excretion of large amounts of copper. The use of penicillamine is complicated by the fact that it may induce a transient worsening of neurologic function due to rapid mobilization of copper, and also has other side-effects, such as the development of nephrosis. Tetrathiomolybdate is an effective alternative with fewer side-effects [26]. In cases in which the dose was rapidly escalated, however, bone marrow suppression or liver function abnormalities have been described. 

Neurologic function should be assessed by the Cerebral Performance Category and the Glasgow Coma Scale.

There has been no comprehensive evaluation of neurological function in animals after oral exposure to hexachloroethane. The data are limited primarily to clinical signs immediately after exposure and to histopathological evaluations of the brain tissues, which showed no effects. The highest NOAEL values and all LOAEL values from each reliable study for neurological effects in each species and duration category are recorded in Table 2-2 and Figure 2-2.
