Analytic ability

In some very recent work by Karssenberg et al. [130], attempts have been made to improve the analytical ability of a technique like NMR spectroscopy to effectively predict the distribution of sequence lengths in polyethylene-alkene copolymers. They analyzed the entire [ C-NMR spectrum for homogeneous ethylene-propene copolymers. They used quantitative methods based on Markov statistics to obtain sequence length distributions as shown in Figure 22 [130]. The... [Pg.162]

The way to improve LIBS analytical abilities is double pulse LIBS. It is conducted by using two pulses from the same laser source operated at a single wavelength. By utilizing a modified commercial laser, a proper external trigger circuit allows us to extract two laser pulses with adjustable delay from the same flash-lamp emission, and a relative time delay variable from a few to several tenths of microseconds. The experimental results show that such a technique... [Pg.256]

Since columbite is a very complex mineral indeed, containing niobic, tantalic, titanic, and tungstic acids, zirconia, thoria, ceria, and yttria, Hatchett must have possessed great analytical ability in order to discover in it the new element, columbium. Although the greatest chem-... [Pg.340]

The isotope ratios for the six analyzed curse tablets plus the results from Pintozzi s analysis of curse tablet 90.3—260 are summarized in Table III. These results will supersede those of Pintozzi in all future work due to the imprecision of her 206Pb/204Pb ratios. An estimate of her error in this ratio is approximately 0.6% per amu based on her four analysis of the SRM981 standard. This precision is not within the error limits of the current database. This is in no way a criticism of Pintozzi s analytical ability it is just that the instrument and methods used at that time do not meet the requirements of a modem lead isotope study. [Pg.326]

Sternberg (1988) proposes to replace g with a triarchic theory of intelligence that assumes that there are three independent forms of intelligence—analytic ability, creative ability and practical ability. He argues that current tests focus on analytic ability and do not measure the other two triarchic abilities. [Pg.123]

Sternberg and colleagues assessed analytic, creative, and practical academic achievements. The measures of academic achievements were positively correlated with each other (average r=0.72, disattenuated average r=0.84). They found that different facets of ability measured by STAT were not differentially predictive of academic achievements. They also found that analytic ability correlated with an overall index of performance 0.42 (disattenuated r=0.56) indicating that analytic ability is related to academic achievement even when that achievement is defined in terms of the expanded repertoire postulated by Sternberg s triarchic theory. [Pg.124]

The Sternberg et al study provides little or no evidence suggesting that g is predominantly a measure of analytic ability that does not encompass creative and practical ability. [Pg.124]

The methodology offers great promise for aiding synthetic design. The system can improve and extend the chemist s own analytical abilities, and stimulate the consideration of new approaches. However, it can neither supplant the synthetic chemist nor relieve him of the task of working out a detailed synthetic plan. [Pg.525]

CONSERVATION OF WOODEN OBJECTS RESIDES IN A REALM somewhere between a science and an art. This is as it should be, because some parts of the conservation process require the mastery of an artist and others demand the analytical abilities of a scientist. Both sets of expertise are necessary to successfully develop and apply conservation treatments. [Pg.177]

The increasing analytic ability of modern NMR spectroscopy will make use of long-range coupling constants "/( Si,X) (n> 3) for assignment purposes, in particular for X = H, when gradient-enhanced 2D HMBC experiments can be set up to detect Si resonances as a consequence of very small scalar Si- H spin-spin coupling. [Pg.39]

Contrary to Idealized job descr itions, we do not require specialists who walk on water. Certain personal attributes, hcmever, do enhance overall competency. Analytical ability and intuitive reasoning Is so essential we have discussed those foctors separately above. Self-motivation and initiative is desirable, of course, since the specialist usually works akme. Absolute integrity is an obvious requirement since flie laws of physics cannot be negotiated out existence. Finally, the specialist s communications must be clearly translatable to effective action without disrupting normal rela-tlonsh4>B within the organization. [Pg.354]

LIBS analytical abilities, such as vacuum, buffer gases, picosecond and femtosecond lasers and sensitive ICCD cameras are not practical in a real-life scenario. [Pg.509]

The univariate and PLS techniques were used to analyse the LIBS spectra of 12 soil samples and to build calibration models predicting Cu and Zn concentrations. The results indicate that PLS can improve the quantitative analytical ability of LIBS for soil sample analysis when compared with the univariate technique. [Pg.353]

Excellent analytical ability, including the ability to evaluate alternatives and make sound, creative recommendations and present recommendations to individuals from all levels of the Utility, as well as individuals outside the Utility. [Pg.120]

There are fewer data available to assess the residual concentrations of the 27 organic solvents in soil and sediment samples (Table 16.1.5). Although an effort was made to exclude data from point sources such as industrial sites or chemical spills, the influence of point sources cannot be ignored. Although some of solvents have been detected at trace levels, the median concentration of the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in sediments has often been less than the analytical ability to measure them accurately. [Pg.366]
