In addition to the weathering tests for elastomers described in Section 2.2, testing ozone resistance is significant for rubber products. Here, parts molded from rubber are stored statically (tensile strain) or dynamically (alternating strain) in an ozone chamber at a specified strain, temperature, humidity, and ozone concentration. Subsequently, their ozone resistance is evaluated based on the resulting crack formation.

A wide variety of tests have been developed 1 ASTM for determining the susceptibility of metals to weathering. If a flame arrester is provided with cowls, weather hoods, deflectors, etc., it must be tested for the configuration involved if the test is done to meet the UL, USCG, or CEN standard (see Chapter 8). Maintenance of a flame arrester should be performed carefully to avoid any adverse impact on arrester performance (see Chapter 7). Three different commercial formulations of silicone sealants from Dow Corning was used in the NSF sponsored studies. They were DC-790, DC-995, and DC-983, in the order of increasing modulus. Dumbbell test coupons (samples) were prepared as per the ASTM standards. Some test coupons were maintained at ambient conditions as control and the rest were subjected to simulated weathering. The weathered coupons were removed from the test layout at regular intervals of time and were tested for any changes in crosslink density due to exposure.

Stanners have designed a test rig (Fig. 19.12) which provides results that can be correlated with actual atmospheric exposure data. A short weathering time for hand wash and face wipe samples is appropriate since these types of samples taken from test volunteers are usually processed and frozen immediately and are not subjected to weathering as are the dosimeter or air matrices.
