The safety and efficacy of Hib vaccines have clearly been demonstrated in developed countries and their introduction into the national vaccination programme of developing countries in the future can markedly reduce the incidence of Hib-related disease worldwide. 

Since 2004 the CEA is engaged in a major programme of development of this technology (Le Naour, 2009). All aspects of the electrolyser are studied, through components and modelling, from materials to the plant. Two work paths are conducted in parallel.

Any major materials development programme, such as that on the eutectic superalloys, can only be undertaken if a successful outcome would be cost effective. As Fig. 20.10 shows, the costs of development can be colossal. Even before a new material is out of the laboratory, 5 to 10 million pounds (8 to 15 million dollars) can have been spent, and failure in an engine test can be expensive. Because the performance of a new alloy cannot finally be verified until it has been extensively flight-tested, at each stage of development risk decisions have to be taken whether to press ahead, or cut losses and abandon the programme.

An alternative programme of instraction aimed at reinforcing the use of the triplet relationship when describing and explaining the seven types of chemical reactions was developed by the second anthor and incorporated into the prescribed scheme of work. Concise International Chemical Assessment Documents (CICADs) are published by the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) — a cooperative programme of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). CICADs have been developed from the Environmental Health Criteria documents (EHCs), more than 200 of which have been published since 1976 as authoritative documents on the risk assessment of chemicals.

The Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme of the European Commission launched a few years ago a project dealing with the development and, ultimately, the production of air filters realistically exposed to welding dust occurring during stainless steel welding (Christensen et al. 1999). This project resulted in the production and certification of a batch of 1100 filters for the Cr (VI) content (40.16 0.60 pg/g dust) (CRM 545). In addition, the total leachable Cr content ( 39.37 1.30 pg/g dust) was certified as a means to check for total Cr recovery.
