The process has been continuously improved [71] but so far a breakthrough in the application of electroplated aluminum is still pending. The problem is the price, compared to zinc coatings. Electroplated aluminum is more expensive than zinc by a factor of 3 to 5. Therefore, electroplated aluminum is restricted to some high-tech applications, for example, special optical surfaces. As a corrosion-protective coating, the material is not yet an alternative to the established systems.

Aluminium coatings electroplated from ionic liquids are considered as an alternative candidate to replace cadmium ones. The present studies are aimed at obtaining dense aluminium coatings adherent to the substrate with a definite thickness and mechanical properties. 

The correlation between the parameters of electrolysis (current density, duration of electrolysis, temperature) and the morphology of the deposits on the stainless steel substrates was investigated. The analysis of composition, fine bulk and interface details of aluminium coatings electroplated from ionic liquids was performed by SEM, EDAX and FIB.

The possibilities include control of the environment (perhaps by humidity control, de-aeration, or addition of inhibitors which retard the cathodic process) and control of the surface (by surface coatings, electroplating or producing surface layers of high resistance, as in the phosphate treatment of steels). There are also two more purely electrochemical methods.
