Hot water heaters

Whenever unvented combustion occurs iadoors or when venting systems attached to combustion units malfunction, a variety of combustion products win be released to the iadoor environment. Iadoor combustioa units include nonelectric stoves and ovens, furnaces, hot water heaters, space heaters, and wood-burning fireplaces or stoves. Products of combustion include CO, NO, NO2, fine particles, aldehydes, polynuclear aromatics, and other organic compounds. Especially dangerous sources are unvented gas and kerosene [8008-20-6] space heaters which discharge pollutants directly into the living space. The best way to prevent the accumulation of combustion products indoors is to make sure all units are properly vented and properly maintained. 

Enamels have very varied properties where their chemical stability is concerned. Relevant stability testing must be carried out for the different areas of application. Enamel coatings for hot water heaters, their requirements and combination with cathodic protection are described in Section 20.4.1. 

One of the reasons why it is important to remove suspended solids in water is that the particles can act as a source of food and housing for bacteria. Not only does this make microbiological control much harder but, high bacteria levels increase the fouling of distribution lines and especially heat transfer equipment that receive processed waters (for example, in one s household hot water heater). The removal of suspended contaminants enables chemical treatments to be at their primary jobs of scale and corrosion prevention and microbial control. 

Electric storage hot water heaters and instantaneous water heaters are used for simple domestic applications and are not considered in this text. For many smaller HW and lower pressure steam generation applications (including bakery ovens and proofers, jacketed kettles, fish pots and other cooking equipment, wineries, breweries, textiles, laundries, phosphatizing processes, humidification, steam baths, clean rooms, and pharmaceuticals), electric boilers offer significant advantages over fossil-fuel boilers and are often the product of choice.

Home hot water heaters contain relief devices to provide protection in the event that the heater controls fail and the water is heated to a high temperature. 

In the 1930s there were many accidents in homes because of the explosion of hot water heaters. Describe what features are added to water heaters to eliminate accidents.

Why do hot water heaters lose their efficiency quicker in households with hard water ... 

Natural gas, or methane, is the fuel burned in gas furnaces, gas hot-water heaters, and gas stoves. Gas that leaks from a gas pipe can diffuse throughout a house. Because natural gas is odorless, companies that supply the fuel include a compound with a distinct odor to warn customers of a leak. If the gas is effusing through a small hole in a pipe, the customer has time to shut off the gas supply, open windows to allow the gas to diffuse, and call the gas company to report the leak. If there is a break in a gas line, the customer must leave the house immediately because natural gas can explode when it comes in contact with an open flame or spark. 

Consider the hot-water heater in your house. Classify each case below as an open stem, closed system, neither, or both. 

Recommendation. Replace the existing hot water heater with an instantaneous hot water heater to be installed in the men s bathroom fed from the existing piping. 

Recommendation. Replace the Sioux boiler with a hot water heater similar to the one servicing the newer mixer but of a larger size because of the greater load.
