The control room computer had the capability to give the technicians considerable flexibility and power in controlling both productivity and safety factors offshore. Once the best method of dealing with interferences has been decided upon and the most appropriate method of determination chosen, the analysis should be carried out in duplicate and preferably in triplicate. For simple classical determinations the experimental results must be recorded in the analyst s notebook. However, many modern instruments employed in instrumental methods of analysis are interfaced with computers and the analytical results may be displayed on a visual display unit, whilst a printer will provide a printout of the pertinent data which can be used as a permanent record. [Pg.13]

In more sophisticated instruments, the modern tendency is to replace the micro-ammeter by a digital read-out, and there is an increasing trend to use visual display units to show the results. All infrared spectrophotometers are provided with chart recorders which will present the complete infrared spectrum on a single continuous sheet, usually with wavelength and wavenumber scales shown for the abscissa and with absorbance and percentage transmittance as the ordinates. More advanced instruments also possess visual display units on which the spectra can be displayed as they are recorded and on which they can be compared with earlier spectra previously obtained or with spectra drawn from an extensive library held in a computer memory. The FDA and other regulatory authorities require that all major items of equipment be uniquely identified. All the specified components of the system should be present and correct including printers. Visual Display Units (VDUs) and touch screens, keyboards, and computer cards. The identifying serial numbers and model numbers of all the major items must be recorded. The question as to whether units of equipment need to be dismantled in order to check their component details is often raised. If a unit is sealed in such a way that dismanthng would invalidate the manufacturer s equipment warranty, then disassembly should not be attempted it is not required in these circumstances. The IQ should simply check the unique identity of the sealed unit. Processing boards that are clip-fastened into slots in a rack should have their serial numbers recorded, along with their slot position within the rack. It is worth checking with suppliers in advance of delivery whether their equipment does in fact have unique identifiers. [Pg.263]
